There are so many historical errors in the narration it’s hard to know where to start. It was the Japanese who were outnumbered. A difficult battle to be sure but not part of a plan to invade Australia. Never an intention of the Japanese high command. The 7th division were almost encircled early on but were not ‘choccos’. The Japanese had only about 13.5k troops on this theatre- the equivalent of a single division. They lost 50 per cent of this number to battle and disease. The Australians had at least twice that number and a much better supply line and naval support. After Guadalcanal the Japanese position was hopeless. In Australia this battle- as brutal as it was- has been hyped into a myth. A single depleted division was never going to ‘invade’ Australia. That’s pure fantasy and we knew it, our high command was reading enigma decrypts and knew the advance south was over and that Japanese efforts were focussed towards India. But our politicians hyped up this relatively Minor engagement to create panic in order to justify moving Australian troops back from more important fronts. Later, our government would continue to uselessly deploy Australian troops on ‘mopping up’ operations to try and keep our forces ‘relevant’ to earn a place at the post war table. Turning Blamey into a field Marshall for example is part of this circus. He was not a field Marshall. He was a minor commander effectively under American command. Many Australian and Japanese lives were wasted to serve his vanity, in fruitless attacks on isolated garrisons of Japanese throughout the pacific who could have just been picked up after the war. These ‘battles’ were totally pointless. The best leaders in the Australian army pointed this out… and lost their commands as a result.

I saw this film in the theater in the USA when it was released and my initial reaction was that it was boring and didn't really live up to the critical hype at the time. However over the years I appreciate it more, especially the subtle humor and its charming simplicity. The West certainly could learn a thing or two from foreign films and the humanity of slow-paced bucolic culture.

Must be in my top 10 favorite movies. Trully special in philosofical substance, pure aesthetics, soundtrack, Italy and plenty of room for viewer to fill in the blanks. However one must know Sorentino drew a lot of ideas from Fellini.

Видела весь фильм на канале "Культура". Очень понравился! Русский закадровый параллельный дубляж нисколько не повредил фильму. Сохранилась "музыка языка" оригинала. Очень трогательный фильм , и грустный и смешной. До глубины души задевает.

hats off to the aussies on kokoda. those who recovered would have laffed at this silly deluge of hyperbole, but being real aussies they would probably snicker and insist it was just like this movie, maybe even make themselves think so too.

It actually was fairly important. The loss of Port Moresby via land would have been a major blow and probably cost the Allies the balance of New Guinea. The stand of the "chocolate soldiers" bought time for Australian reinforcements to arrive and save Port Moresby. That in turn bought time for the Americans to arrive in force and to become more effective at fighting the Japanese themselves on the other end of the Kokoda track. In the end, not being able to fully secure New Guinea turned that island into a massive resource-pit for the Japanese military where a whole lot of men, ships, planes, and material they could have used elsewhere was lost.
