My son is special needs and really likes track inspection vehicles like that one. He thinks they are highly underrated and all should be preserved, restored, and put back into service inspecting lines and giving people rides.

Interesting vid. I assume on more than one day or they swapped the train wagon rake around at some point?

Why is the Shark plough brake van attached to the Loco and not at the other end of the Dogfish ballast wagons. It took two sweeps of the lines instead of one.

Thanks for waiting to release the footage, it was a nightmare not being able to share my photographs online! I was the actual fireman for the two days, rather than the character one from the tv series. Superb few days, great to be the first steam loco to stop over, great to see the video too!

Hi Tony, What a difference two years can make. When we reached this point in 2013 we thought that would be the end of the line as raising money to build Mountsorrel Station would take many years. The idea was that a buffer would be added and the GCR could run occasional specials from the GCR to that point. That wasn't to be though as we were fortunate to not only secure funding for the station, but the much larger heritage centre project and second station as well! The station is now built at Mountsorrel and the track laying extended through the bridge.

Great to see how well you have done, under the bridge at the new station, how far on did the line go?

The line continued for approximately 600 yards into the main quarry railway yard where there were engine sheds, a wagon works, load sidings, etc. From there it continued for a further mile over the 1860 bridge to the Midland main line at Barrow Upon Soar

@@MountsorrelRailway It seems that the line from the quarry to the Midland main line is still in use, transporting aggregates, only the method of transportation has changed, seems to be some form of very long conveyor belt !

It goes to show that the GCR is a proffesionally run railway. Although the railway is run by some proffesionals, the majority of the work is done isby volunteers.

Thanks! The railway runs through a wonderful wildlife corridor and is very picturesque. We have put a lot of effort into protecting the wildlife of the route and undertaking tasks to help improve it. Some of this work is clear to see on the film and we are creating a branch line with quite an infectious charm. Although standard gauge, the tight curves, clearances and gradients give almost a narrow gauge feel.

Looks excellent - it will certainly make shipping track materials up and down the line much easier and quicker. The video also demonstrates the great rural views that future passengers on the branch will be able to enjoy!

Hi foxesontherox. Does your dad have any sepcific memories of the bracnh line from Mountsorrel to Swithland? There are very few photos of this stretch and we are reliant on what people remember to get the recreation right. We have just restored a farmer's level crossing and would love to know how close we are to the look of the original.

Additional quote from my Dad, "I actually rode on the footplate of an engine on this line in 1947 as an 8 year-old. Not this engine but a 0-4-0 saddle tank engine Lady Winfred (who was Lady Winifred?). I remember throwing logs on to the fire. ( that must have been before Health & Safety."
