I am not very smart, please help me out here. It's become nearly illegal to dress up as a different race. For example, a white guy dressed up as a black guy, you do that anymore and you're doomed. Forever despised, even exiled! So why is it okay for a guy to dress up as a girl or vice a versa? FYI I wish both were accepted.

I don't get why they picked a man to play this part, he wasn't playing it gay or trans so why didn't they just cast a woman for John's part ?

The original Hairspray (1988) was not a Broadway musical but simply a film vehicle for Divine, who was part of John Waters acting troupe. Divine was the troupe's resident drag queen. Traditionally, Edna has always been played by a male in drag. From Wikipedia: Hairspray is a 1988 American comedy film written and directed by John Waters, starring Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Leslie Ann Powers, Colleen Fitzpatrick, Michael St. Gerard, and Ruth Brown. Hairspray was a dramatic departure from Waters's earlier works, with a much broader intended audience. Hairspray's PG is the least restrictive rating a Waters film has received; most of his previous films were rated X by the MPAA.

BEST Edna EVER because of his stage presence and not needing to wear a fat suit. His singing was serviceable and he managed to carry a tune quite nicely.

I got emotional watching this. I’m so happy that there is some footage of John in this role. He was Emmy favorite comedian of all time. I got to see him do stand up live a year before he passed. He talked about this. I miss him so much.

I know this video is literally from 2009 so I'm literally 12 years late but Chloe is actually so talented and she's improved so much as I've now seen her 3 times in six the musical and she's amazing ❤
