the title is misleading, you are not building an app from scratch, you're just downloading and setting up the widget. Please consider changing the title.

Late in view this review, but thank you. Did we ever as the viewer ever get to be told the name of the app or process to get the topo maps? I’m currently using Workoutdoors on my AW8 . Thank you🙏

Great review, just wonder how you managed to get so much life from the 7? I max out at about 10-11 hours gps tracking and the ultra I can get around 18hours.

Great video, and this was my feeling as well. My only hesitation is the ability to have a map on my wrist while hiking, which you did. I am excited when you release this app for the watch because I will be using it in the future. Thanks for the review

Thanks for this great review. As I walk the West Highland Way 4 times a lot of your journey was familiair to me. I am also very interested in the App you are developing or other suggestions you have for navigation and recording. I am still bit sure what to use on my Ultra for hiking. I can btw confirm that the Ultra works very well for diving. I just used It for diving in Bonaire with the Oceanic plus app. Same thing as you mentioned happened: the app decides that the ‘workout’ had ended when you are 1-2 m below the surface. I would like to decide myself if my dive has come to an end. Hopefully that will be covered zoon in an update.

I dont work in IT, but I have a LOOOOT of problem with procrastiworking, this is alleviated by the fact that there are bunch of random tasks that are crowding my FTE so it is very easy to slide into doing these less essential tasks. I HATE doing things that require decision-making, in particular that affects something longterm, that terrifies me

27:58 that’s why I set it up to turn on the flashlight which I found myself using quite often. Also, even if I start workout it happens 1 or at most 2 times a day and it can be anything: cycling, running, swimming, hiking, rollerblading etc. and it takes a couple of touches and a couple of seconds. And yes, for a serious hike or a trail run you need workoutdoors app which adds more complexity and actions to be done before start.

I wonder if using the "water lock" would alleviate the accidental press of the action button, or if the button overrides that setting. Might be worth testing out for someone with an AWU.

Pretty good review. Most of the reviews of this watch I seen are useless. They’re of people putting it up to the test on their local city parks.

Glad you enjoyed our wee corner of the world. I usually take a paper map and compass as well as my Foretrex when I'm going out on trips, often off-trail. I find in those cases it's difficult to do proper route planning and navigation on digital maps, at least on a handheld/mobile device. That said, I can definitely see a huge benefit to having a small digital topo map on the wrist for quick reference, etc. Just a suggestion: The Ultra displays cooridnates on the Wayfinder face in WGS84 lat/long which as you'll know is of very limited use for practical land navigation purposes. I know you can get apps which give you coordinates in different CRS e.g. BNG for the UK, UTM/MGRS for the US, etc., but it would be really handy to have that in the same app as your digital topo map. The other thing would be being able to place waypoints on the digital map using manually-entered grid coordinates. I know that may involve handling different reprojections if your app is for global use and so may not be trivial, but just thought I'd mention it. I know you say that your take on the philosophy of use for the Ultra isn't to replace these super-specific devices, but as it stands with the Ultra's native capability, I'd be leaving it at home in favour of my Foretrex for the majority of my trips mainly because of those two shortcomings. Also, I agree re: backtrack. Surely a smarter way to do it would have been to make it an always-on "rolling" 10 mile (for argument's sake) track with the ability to switch on "permanent" backtrack. I know suggestions are a dime a dozen when you're developing something, but just my thoughts! Will definitely be getting your app either way.

Really great to follow along your journey, thank you. This watch version is the first one I've considered upgrading to since v1… :) Love your other apps since years back (Sleep++ ftw), so can't wait for the Topography app to pop up in the App Store. From one Apple dev to another, congrats 🙌🏻

I'd buy the Ultra if I could use an app to pull up my route overlaid on an OS map. It looks like you're working on it. As is, I've been backpacking in the UK for years (2.5+k miles) using Memory Maps, which is functional but archaic. Very interested in your app. It was a delight to watch a review of the watch from the West Highland Way.

Did anybody else catch any subtle 'Blair Witch' vibes watching this? The trek starts off so cheerful and sunny, and you skip through and he's lost, and it's raining and he looks cold. And the scottish lands are empty and desolate, with fog nearby always. Great video though!

I’m interested in the Ultra, but I clicked on this video from a creator I’ve never seen before because I went to the Highlands to do the NC500. Best week of my life, basically. I know it’s quite popular with bicyclists (500 miles on a bicycle is my idea of hell…) but I did it at the end of spring so it was still too cold for those trips I think. Anyway… I see Highlands, I click. Great video!

Great video! Loving my ultra. One thing I was surprised to see was only a 10% difference between your series 7 and the ultra. Wondering if the ultra wasn’t connected to a phone (and the series 7 was)?

A fantastic video in one of my favourite parts of the world. Thanks for that David. It may have been mentioned elsewhere but that issue of the workout app interrupting an already running navigation track has affected me on previous watches too. I use Outdooractive for tracking my hikes and starting a workout interrupts that track every time! Something Apple need to take a look at but not, I believe, specific to the Ultra.

Great video - and beautiful Scottish Scenery! On the battery level for Ultra vs s7, was one of the watches connected to a nearby iPhone? My understanding is that an active paired watch will get much better battery life because it can take advantage of iPhone location services, for example, though I am not sure if you have both watches paired, if they both benefit or if it's just the active one?

Ultra is not worth £850 when next year the ultra v2 is out, then another year later v3... they are throw away, on Average you loosing 35-45% per year.... after 4 years battery is gone or so poor you can't use it as intended SIM costs £7+/- per month £168 over 2 years ....
