Thank you so enlightening. Since my terrier has been having more 'wild' exercise her confidence and well-being seem to be so much better now. Having read this I feel I haven't just imagined it

Excellent, thanks very much. That is probably the most well researched and presented KZfaq video I have seen. My parents had a 2 year old guide dog that could not complete its training due to a joint issue, its training and excercise regime had been perfect.

So good! Great to have robust, science based advice to work off next time we’re lucky enough to welcome a new puppy into our family. I now realise that what we were told in the past were just half truths at best, and dangerous myths at worst! 😳

Most pet dogs diagnosed with clinical hip dysplasia suffered long term clinical signs. Owner assessments suggested that 42-66% of affected dogs experienced lasting effects, while veterinary experts identified physical abnormalities in 71-96% - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17435096/

University of Florida researchers crossed dysplastic Labradors and normal greyhounds to produce a colony of hybrid ‘greyadors’. Around half of first-generation greyadors developed hip dysplasia, but crossing first-generation greyadors with greyhounds reduced the incidence to 1 in 38 - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12693530/

University of Pennsylvania researchers showed that lean Labradors had a 5-fold lower risk of hip dysplasia, a significantly lower risk of arthritis, less severe chronic pain (which occurred relatively later in life), and an average lifespan which was 1·8 years longer than their overweight littermates - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11110459/

A 1975 study funded by the NIH found that crate-confined German shepherd dog puppies were less likely than unrestricted puppies to develop hip dysplasia. The author’s actual conclusion - that a wide-based stance limits dysplasia - might have evolved into the fallacy that exercise restriction prevents hip dysplasia - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1224531/

My girl had this surgery in Dec 5 23, shes back to running and playing like normal. Ocassional favor of the leg as it seems to get stiff after a long sleep. Im sure like humans feeling a surgery spot after inclement weather, she does too. Very accurate vide to our experience. The restriction was diffuclt, but very necessary. Short frequent walks, linger walks, adding hills, not letting her run, not letting her jump. Crated for the frist week(ish). She eventually learned to escape her cone, had to fasten it to her colar. Slept next to her crate, someone was with her always the first couple weeks. eventually restricting her to one room while at work, sleeping on the futon with me. It was very low so she didnt have to jump up and down. Shes been back to regulsr activity for a couple months, and back to daycare this month. Thankful to the skilled surgeon that helped her and fixed her torn CCL. Shes an active girl that loves hikes, long walks, trail work days, canoe trips, and just chasing a ball or the occasional rabbit.

Loved this, after my lovely girl was diagnosed with a brain tumour the neurologist said as I left if she was my dog I'd operate, and it stuck with me and I felt such guilt after sharing and talking with my primary vet we decided together for palliative care which I really appreciated this talk made me feel better about my decision.
