I too am a Waldo lifer. I started camping at this lake since I was seven. I am now turning 59. Waldo lake has always been the place I requested to spend my birthday every year. I have been very lost in my yearly tradition. Wishing for Waldo’s speedy recovery. Kayaking is the best. You just need to start out early, enjoy the beautiful coves and let the afternoon winds take you back to the north shore. So many good memories. Thank you so much for your video.

Thank you. I gotta say, it was sure amazing. While I've only been there the one time so far, since filming that I've now got an ROV and a pedal drive kayak to film off of. So with the both, I should be able to really get some unique footage there underwater. And I do look forward to going back. Currently with the fires though and my lack of in depth knowledge of the lake, I'm not sure how close we can still get to the islands. While not sure, I think that's the end of the lake that got hit this time.

@@Harold2124 as we know it, it's extremely old, and a canoe. My guess from this footage, " and I'll be getting more next filming run, but my guess is at least 10' long. I can't be sure as the bow is not able to be seen any longer. What we do know is it's condition is poor due to age when compared to other wood items in these cold waters. As I am not a certified expert here, I can only go by the evidence we see on my footage. I do know that some years back when I first discovered it, the state sent divers down to examine it and it was dated quite old and was not able to recover it as it's just too fragile. Likely would just disintegrate if attempted so it's better to leave it in place and I can gather as much 4k video as possible to record it as is in the hopes of documenting for the future. In time it will no longer be able to be seen. So my work here is valuable in one form or another before it's lost. I'm so blessed to locate it again after over 2 years of looking again. The R.O.V. is a critical tool allowing me to accomplish this goal so that all can see it in place and protected as it should be. I also solved an old fable here about a lost row boat of clear lake in another video where I verify that the missing boat of long ago is in fact a true tale.

I apologize in advance that this comment may come across as somewhat difficult following my initial inquiries in the first comment. Nevertheless, your response has led me to question the validity of the conclusions you have drawn. Given the presence of a connection system between hardware and joinery modalities in this craft that deviates from traditional Indigenous watercraft, I must question the dating and cultural origin without proper documentation citation. Out of respect, I should validate that my professional expertise lies in the fields of historic restoration arts, Wilderness Guiding, and traditional woodworking, where I also specialize as a Sawyer, along with other professional skill sets related to this topic. As an individual of mixed First Nations heritage, I approach claims regarding artifacts that are said to "pre-date our existence as a country" with skepticism. I believe such assertions require thorough verification, and I have frequently encountered instances where these claims are either entirely inaccurate or involve misidentification. Additionally, I am knowledgeable in the construction and use of traditional skin-on-frame kayaks, canoes, and other watercraft specific to folk and Indigenous cultures. This remaining frame bears no resemblance to any recognized pre-European antiquity watercraft styles that I have encountered throughout my four decades of engaging in traditional woodworking and studying such craftsmanship. The assertion that “... Wood does deteriorate in fresh water from all sorts of things…” is largely inaccurate and does not hold true in the majority of instances. I would like to reiterate that I am experienced in both traditional and contemporary milling techniques as well. For one of many examples, mill ponds are part of many traditional milling operations for a number of reasons. The convenience of material handling is evident in the fact that logs can be transported more efficiently on water, and historically serving as the primary power source for sawmills until modern times. Despite advancements, the practice of maintaining ponds persisted even in modern times. One additional rationale is to maintain the logs in a "green" state and protect them from deterioration caused by insects and other related decay vectors. It remains a common practice to find and harvest logs that are several centuries old from rivers and lakes, such as the lake in your video. In certain regions, such as New Zealand, logs can be over ten thousand years old, particularly in water that is rich in tannins. The only time wood is found to decay is primarily observed in specific estuaries, where wood-consuming annelids are present. I agree that an artifact like this is better preserved in situ if the proper recovery is not conducted but losing it to the muck of the lake is a sad loss even with some photos or videos taken. Thank you once more for sharing this and fine videography...

Thank you for sharing this intriguing wooden artifact. What distinguishes this as a "canoe" in contrast to other types of ancient vessels? Do you have a dendrological date for this artifact that confirms your description and authenticates its origin date and type of vessel? Given that wood typically does not deteriorate in fresh water, what accounts for its degraded state? Could it have been above water near a bank for an extended period, hastening its decay? Are there any plans for further study?

@@JayCWhiteCloud several years ago I located this with one if my drag cameras and reported it to the state. They sent a dive team to get samples of it to determine several things. Age, what it was etc. After that there was an attempt to raise it, but it's condition was far to bad to attempt it. Good thing too as it's part of the history of the area and lake. While I was not provided with final papers on this, it's old enough to say it pre dates us being here as a country. So for indepth info on this craft I'm not privy to it. I feel very blessed to have not only located it in the past, but now able to film it in a way that gives it the respect it deserves, and to bring to light a unique piece of history, preserved in a way that will live on. In time it will be below the substrate and moss never to be seen again. This is one reason that I wanted so badly to capture it on film like this. In it's place, undisturbed. As it should be. Wood does deteriorate in fresh water from all sorts of things, but these trees and the remains seen here are assisted in preservation by these very cold waters ranging from 34 degrees to 48 at the other end of the lake. So many bacteria and such don't live here.

Unlike some people who don't care about what has gone before or what's to come, intelligent people find history, memories, to be the best part of life. If we're blessed enough to be allowed to grow old, it's memories we cherish most. All history is important beyond words. Sad that some youngsters don't realize that. If they did, they'd take more care. Hopefully, one day, they'll understand.

I suppose in your generation, EVERYONE loved history. We both know this isnt true. So please, stop saying my generation are ignorant to history. Its ignorant within itself.

@@HoozpoppinI don't think anyone said any generation were ignorant. But more that as one gets older it's memories and history that become more important, and the best parts of life. Heck, I was not a big fan of history when younger. But at some point it clicked. And as any mind goes, questions arise and I started looking for answers. In a case like this one, it's the answers and filling in the blanks of history that drives part of me.

Did you know that the town of Pleasant Hill (not Pleasant) - located right southeast of Eugene - is the home of 1960's counterculture icon Ken Kesey? Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters were a big deal in the 1960's and went traveling around doing shows in their "Furthur" bus. There is a statue memorial to Ken Kesey in downtown Eugene, in a place known as Kesey Square.

@@Amberdogproductions I don't know about Waldo Lake, but I wouldn't be surprised if he spent some time there. He lived in Pleasant Hill and probably had a connection to the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta. The Grateful Dead played at the Fair in 1972 I think, and the Eugene area was like a second home to them.

@@Amberdogproductions Yes, the main connection was that you mentioned passing through "Pleasant" (really, Pleasant Hill) in the video on the drive to the lake, and said that it seems like a town in a horror movie. But Pleasant Hill actually has this history.
