The DLC was indeed extremely satisfying for the many confirmations it gave us. Philosophically there's much to say about Miquella's path, too.

Well done, I think you've solved Gold Mask with this one. The philosophy that we must accept the world as it is and stop struggling against what can't be changed fits greatly into Miyazaki's other games as well, where most of the trouble begins with certain characters trying to resist the natural course of the world. Also, really like the connection you made between Elden Ring and the eastern parable of "looking at the finger, not what it's pointing to". There must be something there! 🤔

Great video essay. Loved the style,i think goldmask is what radagon wanted the elden ring to be,he didn't become a god like marika because he couldn't remove himself from the equation of the order of things.

@jacopoarmini788915 күн бұрын
I think that the flaw in Goldmask's reasoning is that man, or any sentient being, cannot live without meaning, without a narrative. Our mind was not made to observe the world as a bunch of valueless calculations, and even if we could, what kind of creature would we be? Soulless machines made only to procreate and survive in service to our selfish genes. Casting away narratives, morality and value would be like killing what makes us human, and for what? Aren't we doing all this to follow some kind of value, some kind of morality? The logic of Goldmask is a foolish attempt at deicide, not understanding that it is actually a suicide born of arrogance and a petty attempt at playing God.

The fallen leaves tell a story. The great Elden Ring was shattered. In our home, across the fog, the Lands Between. Now, Queen Marika the Eternal is nowhere to be found, and in the Night of the Black Knives, Godwyn the Golden was the first to perish. Soon, Marika's offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring. The mad taint of their newfound strength triggered the Shattering. A war from which no lord arose. A war leading to abandonment by the Greater Will. Arise now, ye Tarnished. Ye dead, who yet live. The call of long-lost grace speaks to us all. Hoarah Loux, chieftan of the badlands. The ever-brilliant Goldmask. Fia, the Deathbed Companion. The loathsome Dung Eater. And Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-knowing. And one other. Whom grace would again bless. A Tarnished of no renown. Cross the fog, to the Lands Between. To stand before the Elden Ring. And become the Elden Lord.

I’m not sure any of the analysis in this video is all that correct… you speak of the duality of ones self, and use two examples, but there are many exceptions to the rule - for example what was radahns dual nature? Or rykards? Or dragon lord placidusax? Or ranalla? Also you say some of the themes are death, decay and the passage of time… but offer nothing to substantiate them… this is also very vague since i could make an argument that halo has those same themes You can do better my friend :)

I appreciate the feedback, and even though I disagree with you I value any and all constructive criticism. The truth is that we know very very little for certain in this game. I was merely making an observation on what we do know. :)

These are the more esoteric approaches to ER out there. But I think they can be done with a satisfying degree of success. Centered Tarnished is someone who tries to articulate that the whole narrative, the Lands Between themselves, revolves around Marika's shattered psyche (which she did to herself), and that our journey as tarnished is fundamentally one of attempted healing. It's a pretty fascinating way of seeing the game.
@BaylenProductionsАй бұрын
I'll have to check it out!

I appreciate especially the short duration of the video. While other channels follow an encyclopedic approach (some legitmately, others woth the delusional vain attempt to craft the ultimate one-and-all of lore videos while they actually have nothing to add) you chose to underline previsely one theme (duality of the self) and wrap it up concisely. I found it very enjoyable. It's also acute to remark that in the obsession to trace the history and lore of this fictional setting by tje most minute detail we risk to lose sight of the themes.
@BaylenProductionsАй бұрын
I'm very glad you liked it! I always try to keep my videos concise and to the point (though I fear my tech reviews can be bit long winded).

It has the exact smae theme as every other Fromsoftware game: Religious people are either stupid or evil, and trying to live forever just causes more problems
@matteoflamigni550Ай бұрын
While not exactly wrong, this is an incredibly superficial outlook on ER story. Besides, the game Elden Ring has a few religious characters who are not evil at all. And in Bloodborne the Church (arguably one of the most evil religious institution ever portrayed) is actually a scientific research collective and not one of their numbers has one iota of properly defined faith. In Dark Souls we see deceitful and oppressive religions (Way of White) alongside enlightened ones (Velka's Pardoners etc) but then you have good and bad people in both. In fact, the bloatedly overused trope of "Clerics Evil, Let's Kill the Gods" that is so culturally prevalent in Japan is the smokescreen Miyazaki casts to conceal his deeper themes.

@@ishi... thanks, too kind. Truth be told, I have indeed written three essays on ER (specifically: the philosophical themes in ER) for a videogame articles site, Silicon Arcadia; and my favorite influencer red the three essays on youtube. They are all in italian though. Rewriting them in english would be no prob (I am decently fluent) but I honestly doubt Ziostorm or whoever would be interested in reading them.

Pretty much perfectly summed up my opinion on the lore, and also how its sometimes difficult to discuss nowadays considering so many people's approach. Don't get me wrong, I love the grandiose fantasy epic side of Elden Ring, I think it does what a fictional story should do, which is take real world themes or philosophies and turn them into fictional narratives. Not only does it have the compelling and interesting narrative of a good fantasy story, but it also uses the medium perfectly to convey deeper themes. That's all to say, Elden Ring unlocked a lot in me, I'm glad I played it when I was as young as I was because if I hadn't I don't know how long it would've taken me to find what I'm passionate about. Perhaps you feel similarly, I'd be curious to know.

Love the analysis and artistry. Are you really 14?? I don’t play video games, but I’ll stop myself from thinking ‘just a video game.’ If you can reference Kubrick when discussing a game, there has to be something more worthy in the story!
