This is a very poorly made documentary made by author who also shows up as the main expert on everything in his own film. He's not wrong regarding the basic facts about the gdr. But his focus is narrow, the overall picture very under complex. His single goal is to promote capitalism. It's so much on the nose that it is annoying. As someone who was born and grew up in east germany the lack of detail and the arrogance of somebody that never experienced socialism oder dictatorship but explaining it is disturbing. Zitelmann just uses parts of the history and left out others to promote a certain message. Thats not how historians work imho. Less opinion, more facts, more sources, wider focus.

It's true that people left the eastern zone but I never heard it anybody calling the "Brain drain". One big motivation for that was that the eastern zone was much tougher on "Entnazifizierung" meaning remove old nazis from key positions, jail and deport them to Siberia. In west germany a nazi could make a career in the government, the university oder in the judicial system.

Also remember that investing can wait until you finish paying off your debt. For the most part, investing doesn’t give you as much return as debt takes away. So you don’t come up on top that way. Pay off your debts or atleast pay off a significant amount before investing. Always start off with the high interest debts. If you have money left over WHILE paying your debt, good and great. Put that money to work through investing. But saving is as important as debt. Put away 3-6 months of expenses for a rainy day so you don’t always have to worry about what will happen if you lost your job. Always leave below your means, not above. Remember, no one was expecting the pandemic and millions of people lost their jobs and couldn’t come up with money for their necessary expenses let alone entertainment. Always track your expenses. It’s only when you start tracking expenses that you’ll know how much of unnecessary expenses you have. People don’t realize how much money they spend altogether in say a month through just eating out and buying 2 coffees everyday. These little expenses just pile up. You’ll notice that only when you start tracking your expenses. I know nerdwallet is an excellent app for that. And overall, be smart with your finances. Your future self will thank you.

I would have changed the mind of east Germany. I would have gathered all east Germans to break the wall and the system.

The economy may evolve, but without law that’ll satisfy the people and add more restrictions that bring prosperity in the first place, it'll end badly. In conclusion: if the government controls 100% of the people by trampling on their right and freedom, they will lose talented people who'll bring them wealth as well as disobedience.

Okay so I have a few thoughts on how I know that this is conservative propaganda. 1. The use of the word "virtue". Although I do think the left should reclaim that word, this seems to be the christian use of the word. It's not exactly clear though. 2. The fact that the "virtue" extolled by this little thing is called "compassion" is hilarious double-think. Yeah conservatives, it's really compassionate to reload a cannon. Truly 1984 fascist propaganda on that one. There's probably a more appropriate word than 'compassion' but to conservatives they couldn't waste time on that. "Hurry up and get that dog cartoon to the kiddies! We've gotta show 'em that killing people is compassionate!!" 3. It's obviously aimed at indoctrinating children, which is the only way christians and conservatives can actually recruit anyone who isn't a recovering meth-head. They made it a cartoon, they made it talking animals, and they made everything a pun... for about 40 seconds before they were like "Uh but hey, forget the dog thing this really happened" which is like... why did they even bother with the pretense? It's because conservatives are all 80 years old and think cartoons are only for kids - which hasn't been the case since the 1970's. Thank you for listening to my ted talk.

A little correction: It was never illegal to receive Western radio and TV. It was frowned upon, and when you wanted to make any sort of career, you avoided talking about it. In the 1980s, the attitude became much more relaxed; people could officially get antennas and color converters for Western TV. At one "Kessel Buntes", a big popular revue show on TV, one time in the 1980s a band suddenly broke out playing the theme of "Dallas", and the thousands in the big hall went berserk.
