Hey Jason, love your content mate. I am Sydney based too and wanting to get into Cichlid breeding. Just planning my first (of hopefully many) breeding racks 😊 I have been keeping mbunas for over a year now and am thinking of starting off with yellow labs and Lombardi as I am hoping these would be easy to sell to LFS. Do you think it's a good idea and could I buy breeding pairs off of you? Ta Zaheed

For anyone wanting easy water changes you can just have an over flow connected to a drain in you sump. I have the overflow at the side were water enters the sump, then i just start pumping in fresh water slowly in the return pipe for a few hours. Running 24x 120liters this way in my tetra breeding room

Right on mate! Completely agree with you on why not good to strip fry. This is also know with chickens. If a hen goes broody and raises her chicks the offspring will almost guarantee do the same. I have witnessed this first hand with my flock

Hi Jason..thanks for all your informative videos...really encouraging for hobbyists. I had a query...i have calvus around 15 or more.. of them...3 years old i guess...but they love hiding....do the presence of bigger synodontis featherfin...decorus.. affect there coming out...are they scared of them?? They used to come out before but now less.They hiding mostly... I have few other dither fish like our indian barbs that are always moving....and they are 3 inches and bulky... i need your advice....thanks..

I breed mine at 27C in a 60 gallon community tank I keep in a grow tent. My male likes to let her in right around every full moon. They seem to vastly prefer bug bites over super green repashi. I don’t do water changes, no stem plants, lava stone capped with black sand. I seem to get about 50 every month from a single pair. I use plant watering spikes but the male prefers a unique piece of wood to spawn. I use 24 hour grow light full surface covered in frogbit. During a move they spawned at room temp in a pressure cooker pot in my counter

After watch a couple of your videos, i seriously believe that it is so much easier to strip the babies. The multiple problems related to have the parents are not worthy the "benefits of leave the fry with the parents" for example the clown fish in the wild only a few of them survive but in controled setups is around 95 percent.
@escatofago
@escatofago 3 ай бұрын
he said that he keeps the fry with the parents to dont stress the fishes, but it is more stressful for them stay without feeding for weeks and fight to the death for their fry mate, For me this doesnt have any sense

Is more rock or less better ?
@JasonsCichlids
@JasonsCichlids 4 ай бұрын
It really depends on the fish with some preferring open water such as Cyprichromis and Cyathopharynx. However for Julidochromis and most Neolamprologus I would say you can't go wrong with a lot of rocks.

After a pair spawn do you take out the other fish ?
@JasonsCichlids
@JasonsCichlids 4 ай бұрын
It is best remove all other fish to prevent the fry being preyed upon. However, the bond with regani is a strange one and it is sometimes beneficial to keep a sub-dominant fish in with the breeding pair. The reason for this is that the female of the pair can sometimes attack the male. Having a sub-dominant fish in the tank with the pair will mean their bond stays strong as they will be pre-occupied defending their fry from the sub-dominant fish. I don't like this practice due to the aggression being placed on the sub-dominant fish as well as this fish may still manage to eat some of the fry.

Great vid mate love the manifold. I was wondering what brand the lp60 pump is and how quiet it is. I was also wondering if you think a bleeder valve would be necessary? Especially for someone with less tanks (approximately 15 double or single sponges. Regards Duzzy🇦🇺
@JasonsCichlids
@JasonsCichlids 4 ай бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you like the manifold. the brand that makes the LP60 is Resun. Hard to say how quiet it is but I would say the bubbles it creates are louder than the pump itself. Good news though, you wont need to make a manifold like me as they are sold with a 14 outlet manifold as standard. You could use a T-piece off one of them to get you to 15. As for a bleeder valve, again you can simply use a T-piece off one of the outlets and attach a tap to one end. Close/open it as you need. Hope that helps 👍

Can you do a water change from the sump? Take/add new water from that instead of one of the tanks.
@JasonsCichlids
@JasonsCichlids 4 ай бұрын
I could but because I don't have it drilled for a drain it would be tedious. If I did I could fill up the aquariums and just let the water overflow out the drain in the sump. However, I don't really like this method as you do lose some new water as well.

Great video I just got 5 of these beauties in a species only tank I'm hoping to breed from your video I think I might have 3 females and 2 males but not totally sure. So you mentioned terracotta pots and that they will spawn in them can you tell me about other areas they will spawn like under rocks or beside rocks or will the also spawn on the open sand ? 🤔. I'd love any advice you could give me. Tia
@JasonsCichlids
@JasonsCichlids 4 ай бұрын
Looks like you spawned them very quickly Tina, I just responded to your other messages. So well done with that. They won't spawn on the open sand as they like to dig. They will spawn under caves as well as in terracotta pots.

How do you get your leleupi so calm. Mine are really aggressive towards any other leleupi in the area. Weird. Do they get calmer when they get older?
@JasonsCichlids
@JasonsCichlids 4 ай бұрын
If you only have a few and they are all males then you will get aggression. If there is a female in the group then a pair should form at which point you should remove all the other leleupi. Hope that helps
