Who is funding this project?

We received funding from a Community Grant made available through Lendlease. Since then we have installed another 20 nest boxes for greater gliders with funding provided from our Ipswich Council as part of an Environmental Grant. They are all currently monitored through funding from National Parks & Wildlife foundation to gather information about occupancy.

@@luisemanning7073 ok I thought it might be private funding! I’m just surprised this kind of work isn’t carried out on a grand scale! Seems simple and easy and does what takes most trees 50 to a hundred years. More work needs to be done to prevent road kill on highways too.

Hi Luise, thanks for posting this video. I'm planning on building a couple of owl nesting boxes for my local community garden in Northcote (Melbourne). We think we have boobook owls in the area. Do you know whether the tunnel / boxed entrance is a necessary / important feature for boobook owls? Thanks in advance. Oliver

I was under the impression that owls needed the entrance like a perch the also act like a Perch for chicks. The boxes we use are made by a council preferred contractor. I also know these boxes can be used by Australian wood ducks who breed in tree hollows & the tunnel is useful for the chicks to perch on like a diving board before leaving nest eg they jump of onto the ground below. To identify if U have Boobooks you wld hear them at night they have a long " more pork" call. We surveyed boxes - found a ring tail possum in one of the 2 Boobook boxes. The small mammal boxes eg glider boxes were Inhabited & mammal boxes were used more. Bird boxes were not inhabited when 12 month survey conducted. Another catchment group found similar results with bird Box take up rate lower than mammal box take up. We think we shld install several on one tree as opposed to single trees. Birds offen flock & use multiple hollows in trees. They need each other as lookout birds. Owl boxes have to be alone as predator birds are solitary. Best to get advice from birdlife Australia for design timber construction. U need to site them with opening facing away from sun but place in westward position. Need to have a way to hang on the tree without harming tree eg stretchy wire we also ensure there was a bit of a bump knobble on the tree so the box could wedge on it & not slip off. U don't want it to fall on anyone. Hope that helps.
