You don't need to have a degree or certificate, but each state's requirements are different. Check with the CHW Association in your state.

Most certification programs are less than 6 months. Many CHWs have years of lived experience. The qualifications to become a CHW depend on the state that you live in. Check out the CHW Association in your state to find out their requirements.

Thanks for your question. I'm not familiar with the NBHWC but I do know that the CHW scope of practice is dependent upon the state and the organization they are employed in. Some organizations do train their CHWs to work as health coaches.

Nursing is a different career path that you can pursue with or without your CHW certification. The education and training to be a nurse is longer and more robust. Your experience as a CHW will definitely be a plus but it won't necessarily help you to become a nurse.
