Hard to say, could be a ton of things. I would take the tubes out first and then try it to see if its a bad tube first.

If you have a meter that is sticking in a certain place try this. Set up a small A. C. power transformer and a pot to divide that voltage down. Set the voltage to zero and hook it to your meter, then slowly turn up the voltage until the meter needle is in the area of sticking. It will be vibrating quite fast because you are putting a.c. on a d.c. meter. Let the meter sit with the needle vibrating on the area it sticks. Give it at least an hour. Overnight is good. After working the meter needle in the area is was sticking, it usually frees it up. Meters usually stick due to not being used. The lubricant hardens. I’ve recovered many meters with this method.

The early mobile D&A Bandit used a strange circuit that had a tube keying circuit. So the power supply squealed all of the time it was turned on. The other strange thing was that it used the power output tubes as a preamp on the receive state! Has anyone out there ever seen such a beast?

A nice explanation Doc.👍 I ran into something that I hadn’t thought about the other day. I got a Sonar mobile amp with 4 power output tubes. It also has a keying circuit that uses a tube. So when you hook that mobile amp to 12 volts, the big switching transistors start high frequency switching, even when you aren’t keyed. The little switching tube cannot work unless that circuit is producing high voltage for the keying tube. My ears can no longer hear them switching, but my wife put the hammer down on me!🤣 It sure is nice to have modern electronics available.

Back in the 80’s I used to design and build CB amps for fun. I built one that started as a simple 2 sweep tube amp, about 100 watts, grounded grid. From the cathode of the tube I used a regular Z-28 choke that went to a relay and then ground. But then I cut the circuit on the ground side of the choke and installed a wire wound variable resistor. I think it was about 2,500 ohms and 35 watts. With that I could totally vary the output watts of my amp. Not only that, but if I turned it down to about 25 watts output, the swing was incredible! People on the receiving end were amazed to see their S meter smoothly go up and down as I turned that resistor🤣

I didn't build, but I used to repair and mod in the 70's as a kid. Was doing pretty good at it too, until someone pulled out the window bars of my parents house to get to the stuff I had in the basement. People suck. Also putting the resistor in the cathode will work, but if the amp is a tetrode, put the variable resistor in the screen. That works great with amps and plate modulated radios too.

@@tramdrI totally agree Doc, people suck! (And I’m not talking about you, I’ve never met you, but you sound like a fine gentleman) I’ve been an honest guy who followed the golden rule my entire life. I’ve given and given. And, other than my Elmer, I’ve been kicked in the butt for it. My wife and I are 68 now and my wife is dying of a rare blood cancer called MDS. And most of our “friends” have suddenly turned their backs on us. Even after years of accepting our help. Yes, people suck. I doubt that I will get time to build that circuit Doc, but it makes sense. Kind of a turbocharged amp with variable power. I would think that it would be extra loud!

Weird stuff Doc!🤣It sure is great to see someone who can draw schematics! I don’t want to brag, but I thought I was the only guy left who knew how to do that. I used to sit in the back of church and design circuits on a pad. I was sitting next to a guy one time drawing a circuit for a regulated power supply and he asked how I knew it would work? I said it has to. The design physics and math are set in stone. Next week he asked me if it worked and I said yes, exactly as figured and drawn. He just shook his head! That was back in the 70’s. Are there no young people out there today who can design and draw circuits? Please tell me if you are young and can do so. Thank you sir! You are a breath of fresh air!

I have the MLA-2500 purchased new in the late 70's. It was used very little but I'm wondering other than the electrolytic capacitors how well the tubes and certain other parts have held up over the pass 46 years. I want to restore it and wondering if tubes degrade sitting around? Any tips would be great to know. Thanks Dan
@tramdr
@tramdr 7 күн бұрын
Tubes don't degrade sitting, but the problem with the MLA-2500 was the tubes. They were usually abused 2 fold. Dentron juiced up the filament voltage in most their amps including that one. This would make the tubes put out a lot more, but of course, the tubes would last maybe a tenth of what they should. Plus, the tubes are hard to find and very expensive, plus, since most CB'ers go with the Mo watts theory, they pushed those poor tubes hard too, to get Mo watts. Hence, many people would push that amp to get 2500 watts out and quickly toast the tubes. With the tubes being hard to find and costly, some people would mod that amp to take other tubes like 4cx400's os a single 4cx800. However, a mod like that ain't easy for someone that is not an expert with tube amps.

'Congrats' on the sweet meters!' Sure is nice feeling when that package comes and the seller took the time to safely pack this kind of equipment for the ride! I'm always holding my breath when unboxing Lol. Doc, Question- I'm finding myself having to use 6ft and even longer jumpers to get to certain radio's from the amp on my tables. Things seem to be okay with this.. my match changes slightly (all staying below 1.5) and of course the amp tune can be slightly different as well but again nothing too different. I just dont want to mess anything up. Whats your take on jumper lenghts from meters to amp to radio? That would be a great video topic for you to do! Really enjoy your videos and thanks for other questions you've answered of mine! Been some crazy DX lately.. im always listening for you on the air, hope to hear you on AM or SSB sometime! 73' NB160 Jackson✌
