How it works ….. big heavy hooky thing on the end of a heavy chain dropped into the ocean until it hits the seabed, designed to hold the ship stationary

Hebrews 6:19 NLT This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. JESUS IS THE ANCHOR FOR OUR SOULS!

I came here after reading ignorant comments about why didn't the Dali's ship captain drop the Anchor in the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident to prevent it from crashing. From the looks of this video, there was very little the captain/crew could have done in such short time of losing power.

The question was yesterday about Delia's accident which collapsed the bridge in Boltimor - whether anchors on container ships can stop a ship. I'm trying to find out why ships don't drop anchors or do they not brake or its too long to do ?

She did drop at least one of her anchors, but it takes time for the anchor to start meaningfully slowing the vessel down, as while the anchor may start dragging almost immediately, it takes longer for the chain (which provides the majority of the stopping force) to do the same. In terms of braking, she likely did attempt to reverse her engines, but this may actually have made the situation worse as it could've caused the ship to veer off course due to the single screw setup (one propellor = net torque. net torque + no steering = veering off course). Ships are massive things, some of the largest moving things on Earth, so it is extraordinarily difficult to stop them.

We learn something new everyday, I used to think the weight of an anchor alone were like a ball and chain tethering the ship.
