Edgar Degas was not Jack the Ripper. Let us examine what we know about Jack. 1. He had a knowledge of human (or animal bodies) and was likely a doctor, a butcher etc. Also it would help if that was his job title as nobody would think twice of him walking down a street with blood on his clothes. 2. He had an intimate knowledge of Whitechapel itself. He was almost caught several times, and escaped without fail. He even killed one victim on an active patrolman's patrol route, while the was patrolman was elsewhere on that route. 3. He was about 30. Reports go from 22-23 to middle aged, but the average age was 30 and most guesses from the 8 witnesses listed that gave a description said 30. 4. He was somewhat nicely dressed and pale skinned. 5. He stopped killing within months of starting. Indicating that he was dead, detained, or removed from the area. Now let us examine Degas in the light of what we know. 1. There is nothing is Degas job, or parents profession indicating he had knowledge of the human body sufficient enough to disembowel and remove organs with the precision that Jack did. 2. While Degas may have not been a stranger to the area, he never lived there and there is nothing on record indicating an intimate knowledge of the area. 3. Degas was 54 in 1888 and had white hair. 4. Yes this fits Degas. 5. There is no reason, that I can see that Degas would have stopped killing. He lived another 40 years. Why is Degas mentioned. He lived near enough to London and Whitechapel, may have been a misogynist and his paintings show that some of the women that posed for him seem quite scared. If I could travel back to 1888 and start my own investigation, I would start my investigation with one of three three people that satisfy 4-5 of these criteria.
