1982 is often cited as a golden year. The mid 90s was great too.

How did they get in was security scarce 🤔

From what I remember, once they managed to get past security at the front gate, they were able to find their way to the studio unhindered… with a little bit of inside information to help them find it. To get there all you had to do was walk into main reception (the old one with the mosaic tiles) turn right past the lifts and down a corridor to some smaller lifts. Then up to the sixth floor where the studio doors were next to the lift!

amazing to think that copies of the whole event still exist, because in 2001 it required someone to put a tape into a VCR and decide that day was worth taping. Especially outside the USA where say BBC Financial was on, Not truly must see TV. Compare to the USA where we have morning wakeup and chat shows on because it was still morning here and maybe someone wanted to tape an interview with some celeb or catch replay after putting the kids on the bus. Without home video many events of the 80s, 90s, early 2000s would have just been lost outside of official archives.

Even on a big 4k telly this looks (and sounds) utterly superb.

Look at the skyline in the new shots, looks like its been panogrammed form the top of a council estate block. Who wants shots of Big Ben, The Wheel or Buckingham Palace when you can have a nice shot of world beating Manchester skyline and burnt out cars.

22:39 As nice as it was to see Braveheart in this Top 10, I did wish that he had defended it more at the 97 and 98 Oscars when David Ansen and Amanda Donahue didn't have good things to say about it

At some point I’m sure the News Channel and the Six and Ten O’Clock will move to Salford. But who knows how long until that happens.

Have the franchises ever been put out for tender since? especially now as one company owns ITV (excluding STV)?

I was nine at the time, and just came home from school. At the time I would watch cartoons while doing homework but on that day I saw the images of the World Trade Center in smoke. I called Mum over and she said "Oh my God. Is that New York?" before watching the news. When my Dad came home from work Mum told him "To keep the news on". Apart from the 1999 Solar Eclipse and the coverage of 2000 Today, this was the first major news story. My sisters and brother were too young to see any of the footage at the time.

The weird era where the studio broadcasts were 16:9 but the sourced images were mostly 4:3 that was slightly zoomed in. The quality drop was really noticeable on a CRT

The Queen's Mother's death is 22 years ago (March 2002) and more than 20 years later, Queen Elizabeth's death happened in September 2022. Hopefully, King Charles finds many ways to keep England as peaceful as they can, even if things don't go their way.
