Yo. So, with the release of the GH7, I'm taking a hard look at my GH6 and one thing that really sticks out is how hard to edit some of the codecs can be. In theory, h.264 all-intra should be the easiest to decode, but how do you even get the camera to shoot h.264/AVC when (with the exception of 100+ fps) these are not available in creative movie mode? Does it only record h.264/AVC when recording video from photo mode? Any insight on how the GH7 operates? I have a GH5s and it is a bit more clear cut when selecting the containers/file type/rec format. If I select MOV or MP4 (LPCM) I can get h.264 4k 30p all-intra while in creative movie mode, but I can't find a way to do this with GH6.

As LUMIX pretty much shit on the GH6 30 mins post launch is anyone making a magic lantern type software for it ? Release the inner beast.

That would be awesome, it's clearly got the same internals (aside from the sensor) as the GH7, otherwise they would have actually updated some of the shooting modes. I do wonder if them mapping out the software for the GH7 now makes it easier for them to port things to the GH6. I hope there are more updates on the horizon for the GH6, it does deserve a bit more love before they send it out to pasture. It's still a very capable camera, even without the new DPAF system.

Sorry, but when the GH6 was released there were around 50 You Tube video reviewing this camera. This time there were a lot of video. This means that not many reviewers got the camera. Besides that not many are discussing this camera on KZfaq. The above points that the interest in Panasonic video based cameras and m43 related camera in particular has decreased. I think that the GH6 was the time that Lumix should have released PDAF. After that people simple moved on to other brands and cameras as Sony FX30 and Sony FX3. This 2 cameras has more reviews that popup out even when Sony informed of firmware update. That Lumix their camera with PDAF function on fast points that interest in their camera decreased.

I can't deny that I think the market has shrunk over the years for the GH line of cameras. In part, this was due to Panasonic's premature release of the GH6, it was a bad marketing decision, and no one can deny that. But, luckily M43 has Olympus to satisfy some of the photo users outside of the Lumix audience and manufacturers like Blackmagic and Z CAM to cater for the more cinema-orientated video users. M43 is still alive and well and I can tell you that from experience of buying and selling MFT lenses. This looks like a great camera, is it a little late, yes, is it perfect, no, but really what camera is? In part, cameras are evolving much quicker than the technology around them, 90% of shooters don't need 6K or 8K, a lot of Lumix users did just want that reliable AF and everything else is just icing on the cake.

Not something I mention in the video but yeah I have seen people mention that and it always seems like they are saying the pre-PDAF sensors looked better. I could do a comparison if I do get the GH7. I do think some people just don't adjust the noise reduction etc in the profiles or treat V LogL the same as V Log. And I had 8 cam Gig with Helsinki Philharmonic last month thx to GH and S6 I could fit everything plus lens and Ninja V in 2 cameras backpack and take it with me in the plane...so for solo travel multicam Lumix is the king...specially MFT with several telephoto...and even the 100-300 is small...and has a decent IQ. About Denoise I still prefer NEAT over Topaz because it is faster on my PC...

Oh yeah Neat Video is really good 👍 that sounds stressful operating that many cameras. I really like the compact lenses for MFT, I have the 100-300mm as well, I like it. I was saying another comment I like that I can pack a couple of camera bodies, lenses and my drone in one bag and it not break my back 🙂 it's a good system for solo shooters.

I'm interested to see the limitations of ProRes RAW because we are currently capped to 60fps with ProRes. Better DR would be great if they can make that happen on such a small sensor.

How is theis disappointing?! What specs did you hope for? Honestly. 6k 120? For what?!?! GH6 can shoot nearly everything you would ever need to shoot, but autofocus wasn't great so they fixed that, internal RAW, real-time lut and 32 bit float. Seemsnlike a super powerful camera to me. I'm still fairly new to videography, I'm seriously confused on what specs did yall hope for in a $2200 camera.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 3 күн бұрын
The disappointing element for me is just those rumoured top line specs. They are the same as they were in a camera that is over 2 years old. Open gate 60fps would have been nice. The audio aspect of it isn't really part of the camera either, it's an additional accessory. Realtime LUT surely could have just been a firmware update for the GH6 (I haven't actually seen this mentioned for the GH7). It's going to be a great camera no doubt, just not a new generation of camera, more of a GH6m2.

@stevelitton 3 күн бұрын
But I guess ProRes RAW makes more sense because they already license ProRes to be used in the cameras and now the RED internal RAW patent has been bought by Nikon it likely will never be enforced again. For DaVinci Resolve users can still use a Blackmagic Video Assist to record BRAW over HDMI or just buy a Blackmagic camera so you can record it internally.

Yeah its a little bit out of line with the launch messaging of 'New Phase' but I guess they can't keep riding off of that in every camera release as it's not really that much to shout about in 2024, almost every camera manufacturer uses something similar for AF. I hope they have something new to show there like improved video AF options in high frame rates, that would be a nice little additional feature. Bear in mind it's only a leak as well, I could have made that video very easily and said it had 4K 300fps 😂 Not long to go now until we see the real specs.

@stevelitton
@stevelitton 3 күн бұрын
Yeah I have to agree with you there. But it's just a leak and not the actual specs. Who knows, they may have more in store and all those little extra non-top-line features may add up and make it a much more desirable camera.

@@stevelitton Regarding prores RAW, I can say that this function is only needed for very professional video shooting. People who do this are unlikely to record on a memory card. Therefore, it is not clear who this marketing ploy is aimed at. The price of the camera is in the amateur range, and amateurs do not record RAW video.
@stevelitton
@stevelitton 3 күн бұрын
@@lnuponom2678 Yes RAW is for more professional use but I have to disagree with you on whether there is a market for it. GH5, Gh5m2, GH5s, GH6, G9m2 users all have access to RAW recording through the Atomos Ninja and Blackmagic Video Assist over HDMI. People are clearly using it because those 3rd party companies have to write software to communicate with each of those cameras. It's all about use cases, if I want to take a video of my family, pets or a day out, I am not using RAW but if a client is paying me money for a shoot then I will consider it if it fits the budget. People don't shoot RAW to cards because they generally can't, usually they need an SSD to have enough read/write speed. The BMPCC 4k is half the price of the GH7 and I do not consider that an amateur camera by any means, cost doesn't always equate to quality. I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion on it, that is just mine.

@@stevelitton I remember that the GH6 was advertised primarily as a vlogging camera. I won’t argue, I don’t know what cameras are used to record in studios now. Yes, those who worked with BMPCC often wrote to RAW. I read about this. If you think that you will sometimes need RAW and in GH6 or GH7 will give you some advantages, you definitely need to buy GH7.

@@lnuponom2678 I'll wait to see what the real in-depth specs are before making a decision. I think Panasonic marketed it as a professional camera but a lot of KZfaqrs only do KZfaq so they can only say things like 'it has a flip out screen so it's great for vlogging'.

It sounds like my G9 with a fan, a better tilt screen and RAW internal recording, but at £756 more than what I paid for it. I already have the XLR interface, plus better external recorders, so I won't be buying the new one. Unless the price drops significantly, it's a no for me.
