I like the idea of grappling hooks in games, but I usually struggle to control them. There is a platformer series called Umihara Kawase that is based on this mechanic. I’ve tried a number of them, and I can see they are thoughtfully designed - but I rarely get to a point where I “gel” with the controls. The physics in those games is moderately realistic, and the level designs create lots of clever and challenging situations. I guess my brain is too accustomed to “Mario jumps” to smoothly adapt. Another game that uses this mechanic is FlintHook. Really nice rogue-lite game from several years back. I do somewhat better in that one, but struggle a little with the grappling. As much as I love the idea - to me, on some level it’s not as intuitive as running, jumping, shooting, etc.
@NindieSpotlight5 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's always tough. Flinthook I absolutely adore, a nice challenge and it worked pretty sensibly. Another with pretty great grappling that I found very approachable was Kunai and I sadly don't often see it even get a mention

Fun fact - at least from everything I’ve heard and read - there never was an arcade version of Parasol Stars. It was “direct to console. First the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16], then ported to other platforms/systems. I have somewhat less nostalgia for the original Bubble Bobble. Looks like it came out around 1986. Around that time, I steered away from video games for a few years, trying to focus on high school and college. But I’ve played Bubble Bobble since - really a great arcade game. I like Parasol Stars as well, probably equally so - though I agree, lots of similarities in how both games play.
@NindieSpotlight5 күн бұрын
That would explain my hardly recalling it. I think I've just played so much Bubble Bobble over the years that when you're sort of like it, not much harder, and just lacking in originality I tend to get bored quickly. This has been true of the bulk of attempts to revive Bubble Bobble itself as well

Just started playing this yesterday. Have to say, this plays very well, super smoothly. Really a blast. Another winner for Flynn’s Arcade. I think I saw you on the leaderboard! Are you using the initials NIN? I am somewhere below you, but still in the top 10 as of last night (SFB)
@NindieSpotlight5 күн бұрын
Yeah, when I last posted it I was at #2, and for 3 initials I'll use NIN anymore. I initially just thought it was OK but absolutely the more I played the more I dug it. A really great refresh of Robotron with it's own thing going on.

In modern platformers with shooting, should be able to fire in all directions.. or atleast up and down as well. Having to constantly jump up and shoot something on a higher platform is an immediate pass for me. The game looks nice but I can't handle the tedium of only being able to shoot left and right., it gets old fast.

I'm really enjoying your videos, especially since you're focusing on a lot of smaller games nobody else is covering. That said could you perhaps add some final thoughts about the games at the end? Also would you recommend this game? it looks very chill but is there more to it (difficulty wise)? Thanks! :)
@NindieSpotlight8 күн бұрын
@@attton It's just a matter of getting into the groove of things. Pretty much in every case the video review is posted the next day after the gameplay. I'm a big believer in allowing people to check out gameplay and absorb the experience without my interference. Then, if you want my thoughts, hit the review the next day and I'll give you them. But yeah, at just about 3900 reviews at this point there are loads of titles that others simply have ignored, and that makes for plenty of unlikely gems people have missed. As for this specific game, my review for tomorrow is pretty rough overall. In particular the interface and controls are not implemented well for console, and I really didn't see enough rewards for your efforts like some of its contemporaries.

What's with the constant glitching and frame drops? Is it the game or just the recording?
@NindieSpotlight9 күн бұрын
Very odd, all I can assume is that it's something tied to the video getting encoded somewhere along the way. It didn't have those issues when I played, in the raw video, or in the prepped video for KZfaq, it may have gotten chewed up somewhere in that process.

do you think it’s the best ripoff? out of all the ones in the switch
@NindieSpotlight10 күн бұрын
Since I don't have a basis for comparison to what it's copying I can't necessarily say. All I can relay is that the scope of this game is a bit on the small side, and it requires quite a lot of grinding to really get anywhere that's more satisfying. While I wouldn't say there's anything specifically like it I've played on Switch that doesn't equate to it being good.

Maybe it is worth $9.99, which is the price at the moment on the switch. Do you think it is worth it on a discounted price?
@JustinNationMAMEiac13 күн бұрын
That would make it more palatable, yes, the full asking price is clearly higher than it should be. That said, the game is still a bit on the inconsistent side overall so it really depends on the experience you're looking for and what you're willing to tolerate as "quirks". It isn't a bad game overall, you can see its ambitions, it just isn't implemented in all areas all that well.

@@capnphuktard5445 Also, considering RedDeer has continued to overprice their games in order to then immediately and almost constantly put them on sale to make the games look like a great "deal" is a pretty gross practice overall and they've been doing this across their titles for quite some time now.
