Although very intelligent, pound for pound orca's seem like inefficient killers. It takes multiple orcas to finish off prey much smaller in size, and it takes 30 minutes to several hours for orcas hours to turn a chase into a kill. I don't know of any other predator that requires superior numbers and such lengthy time to finish a prey smaller than itself.

What the sea lion cannot inflict a deadly bite on an orca that is pure BS!!! It can surely defend itself but one orca can take down a great white shark who has a much more powerful bite then a sea lion!!!! To those that may feel bad for the sea lion while a tragic end they do the same thing when hunting usually penguins or much smaller seals!!!!

There's not very many sharks in Alaska, mostly just Salmon Sharks, Sleeper Sharks, and Dogfish Sharks. None of which would have been interested in this, particularly like you said, there was a pod of Orca swimming around.

It was "wild wild west" of the open sea! The background music added a very teary drama as we watched bullies do their thing to the bullied. But Orcas would never fight mano a mano. That is their nature though. That brave Sea lion fought for its life till the end, no matter the numbers of the enemy.

Orca. "Bullies" of the Sea. I find myself rooting less and less for them these days. A blue whale may give birth once in a few years and try to escort it to their feeding grounds. Only to have a pod of orcas hunt it down (the calf), drown it and eat it. Sometimes they may only eat the liver.

If it's any comfort, he lived a free life of plenty in Alaska, lots of fish, friends, and water to play in. But it's the wild, and he was as much a part of the food chain as the fish he ate.

Whoa! Superb recording! It's amazing the sea lion could battle for so long. But , the last bit of aerial video, followed by the last part taken from the boat showed the sea lion moving too slow to last much longer. I'd think the sea lion's greater maneuverability would enable it to progressively make its way towards the shoreline as it dodges orcas. Do the orcas forcibly prevent the sea lion from approaching the shore?
@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours11 күн бұрын
Thank you! I think that the Orca kept him in a defensive stance, because he never really tried to swim to shore, because they kept on popping up in front of him. The shore was about a mile away, but if he were to sprint there he could have made it in less than five minutes. I think the Orca have plans if that happens though. Maybe if he were to try, he'd open himself up to attack more?
@gregparrott11 күн бұрын
@@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours Thanks for the reply. It seems like a sea lion facing a pod of orcas MUST sense that it cannot remain accessible to the pod indefinitely and survive. If the pod breaks off the attack for a minute, even 15 seconds, it should get its bearings and make a beeline for the shore. P.S. I've been to Alaska four times. Glacier Bay, Prince William sound, Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, St. Petersburg, Skagway. It was wonderful each time, but each trip lasted only ~ten days.

Three or four years ago I liked Orca's but suddenly I began reading of how bullying they had become and they always appeared to form "gangs",groupsto attack much smaller animals and now you see tales of them launching attacks on boats. I'm not really a fan of Sea Lions because they are so vicious when they hunt Seals. Maybe I've become "softer" in old age, I DO much prefer animals to humans, well in 95% of cases anyway because generally an animal doesn't ask for much whereas humans most always have an agenda. I didn't watch the video here either.
