Do social workers help advocate for adult children who live with their parents because of disability or otherwise? I'm confused.
@KayleighRoseEvans
@KayleighRoseEvans Күн бұрын
Hi social workers work with families, adults and children in various scenarios. Often a key part of the role is ensuring people's rights are upheld. So for example, if a parent is not letting a young person have any freedoms simply because they have a disability the social worker may advocate for them to have more choice and control. Same if they are an adult.

Hi Kayleigh, I've worked very hard on my Access course to achieved all top grades; hold a strong personal statment and experience regarding Social Work/ Health and Social Care and worked my head off for the three stage interview and passed it. My heart morosed through acknowledging only one thing within the job role and deacription, is that I have drive as part of this profession. There is no support regarding disability and mental health which hinders me to drive, due to this profession becoming a community workbased. I have been neglecting it. My dreams have shattered! I've ended up choosing to study law and become a solicetor. I've had a strong passion and interest in Social Work but it all happens for a reason. Maybe god created a different destination for me.

Hi that's such a shame not to go into social work when you've worked so hard for it. I don't know if it's any help now but I do know some social workers who don't drive. I work in a hospital so wouldn't necessarily need to drive for that. Although, law is also a brilliant route you can massively help people in so I wish you all the absolute best in your endeavours ☺️
@Seharkhan69
@Seharkhan69 15 күн бұрын
@@KayleighRoseEvans Nothing has gone to waste if Social work was not the option for me. Becoming a solicetor is still another way of supporting vulnerable clients who have been ripped off or robbed into a contract. So I have nothing to lose. Law is above and beyond Social work, when your supporting service users within Social Work, your still working around laws. The majority of social work careers involve driving licence and it's more community effective. Not being able to drive is not worth of getting in debt for £50,000 for this degree, when options are limited. Thank you for your warm wishes and wish you best of luck for the future with all bright colours in the sky! 😃

You can have roles where they are predominantly based in a building like a hospital where you don't necessarily need to do home visits. However, sometimes visits are needed in these roles for example if having to follow up on protection of property/ animals for example where their are issues for people who have been admitted but if you have difficulties getting there it would be something to discuss and get support from a manager with. Hope that helps.

Thank you ! In the UK local authorities will contribute towards care costs if someone has savings below £23,250. Capital tied up in property can impact on this if a 24 hour placement is needed. If someone has a primary healthcare need the NHS may find care via continuing healthcare funding.

@KayleighRoseEvans if a service users refuses support in a third sector agency, and have the capacity to take the decision would that limit the legal actions which can be taken to safeguard them from risk?
@eastcoast4233
@eastcoast4233 2 ай бұрын
I’d highlight the very misunderstood step 4 of the functional test i.e. communication. So many people mis-assess this and say because the person doesn’t understand or retain the key information they cannot communicate a decision but that’s not what the law says - it’s a decision, not an informed decision. Very very few people should be judged to not be able to communicate a decision. See guidance from the fantastic 39 Essex Chambers. For clarity it’s worth noting that advance decisions (and directives) are healthcare treatment related and so nearly never done by social care staff including social workers. A best interest decision should weigh up at least 2 available options - a single option isn’t really an option at all (no choice) and should not be limited to what the professionals and family think are only the good ideas.

Hi to practice as a social worker you generally need some voluntary experience or experience of helping people in your private life. A lot of people take access courses to get the qualifications needed for the degree so don't let that put you off. Have a search on entry requirements and then may be worth enquiring direct with a university you would be interested in applying for or going through the apprenticeship route.

@KayleighRoseEvans 4 ай бұрын
Hiya, I will be honest when I started uni I was surprised by how much legislation and reading was involved as the job is very practical. However, when in the role you also have a lot of writing to do as you have to feel confident to keep good records, write assessments and write in a way that stands up to scrutiny in a court context. There are lots of assignments, there are law exams and placements in social work roles. I wouldn't say you have to be a bookworm but you will have to read as part of it to get through the course and then are expected to keep yourself informed after completion. You get used to what is required as you go through the course though! Hope that helps 😃
