I found your video because I wanted to paint the Ark of the Covenant box I have to look like real gold in the movie. I followed your tutorial and everything went great (thank you)) except I used Folk Art treasure gold paint instead of the food coloring varnish mixture, and I should have used the food coloring varnish mixture. Lol, presently, it looks more like a bright copper than gold. I want to polyurethane over it, I’m wondering if I should add yellow food coloring to the poly to brighten it up. It won’t be opaque so the copper looking finish will still shine through, but the yellow tint might make it look more gold.

That sounds like a great project to use this on. As for fixing the copper color, I have a suggestion that may or may not work. From what I know about color theory, complementary colors cancel each other out. So if the ark is currently more copper colored (orange/pink), you may be able to neutralize it by tinting it with a blue or blue-green dye. Of course, I would try it first in an incospicuous place before applying it to the whole thing. Or maybe paint a smaller test object that same copper tint and experiment on it. One of my worries about doing this is you may make the surface darker with the blue tint. So you should proceed slowly with weak tints so you could stop if it looks too dark or if the neutralization effect doesn't work.

Thanks for sharing how you achieved the finish you wanted. The item I'd like the same look is much bigger and it's made of steel & wood. I'm not sure I'd get the same results, and it would be to expensive for my project.
@CourtJones
@CourtJones Ай бұрын
Yeah, for much larger items, I think it would be more difficult to coat the surface with gold tint evenly because the acrylic varnish starts to dry as you are working.

Check out Gordon Tarpley's videos on painting his C-3PO costume pieces with gold. He ended up using a technique that requires specific paint treatments and a bigger, more serious airbrush. But it's good for larger pieces.

If you wet sand will the painted and stuff come off in between?
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 3 ай бұрын
I think it depends. You must use very fine grit sandpaper and very light pressure. Or the sanding may damage or even remove layers of paint. After looking back on this project, I don't think wet sending is the answer to a perfectly smooth finish with this method. I think the key would be to make sure that the white glossy enamel layer (which is done right after priming) is a smooth finish in the first place. I think the Testors glossy white enamail spray paint that I used laid down too many bumps. The solution might be to find a white glossy enamel that could be applied with a finer mist using an airbrush.

I love this drawing, Court. I bow my head to your mastery of strokes. The approach to try and sculpt the form with one set of lines (hatching) without the need to cross-hatch for getting darker - and your ability to pull it off, are amazing. Very inspiring for me in my own travels to mastery. Thank you very much for sharing! 😘

i am going to try this with my buddhist statues at the temple. any idea how i can seal it to make it last longer ?
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 4 ай бұрын
The great thing about this technique is that it seals and protects as it tints. The color tint is mixed with acrylic varnish, and the varnish is an excellent protective barrier. Especially if you do three or four coats of it, you're making the surface even more resilient against the elements.

What brush did you use in your self-caricature?
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 7 ай бұрын
You mean, what did I use for the grayscale painting I created in this stream? It looks like I used a couple different ones that I don't currently use in my workflow. But they're similar to a couple of the brushes in my own brush set I offer for sale on Gumroad. Just search for my name there for my PS and Procreate brush sets. The brushes in my set that are most similar and useful for this type of sketch painting are the ones I named "Quick Round Painter" and "Natural Velvet Round" and maybe the "Laguna Filbert" brush.

I unexpectedly saw his paintings in person many years ago in one of the side galleries at the Guggenhiem. They were so beautiful they brought me to tears. Btw, I was surprised at how thick the painting on the canvas was. I always imagined that they would be flat like a print. Not so, at all!
