I don't know whether the underground system in NYC is efficient, I suppose it is, but the stations, trains, concourses, platforms, certainly look grey and gloomy. At least compared with most of Europe, Japan, Russia, China, Korea, etc.

Robbins Lane -- site of the former Landia station from December 1952 to June 1972. Just dirt platforms and lights. I was there once (c. 1970), when the third rail was being installed. The beginning of the station's end.
