I'm looking at the foot work and thinking about how I (myself) could do better. Obviously, in such a situation certain trained / muscle memory things go out the window.

Wrong helmet design - will definitely lead to neck injury! Standard leather helmet should be used. Only purpose is to stop clash of heads.

Hate to tell ya, but unless that first strike is a knock out Hit, you're getting poked full of holes. Definitely would not recommend this as practical knife defense

It’s extremely difficult for a demonstration like this to truly mimic the randomness and potentially lethal nature of a weapon attack. I’ve been involved in knife attacks and it’s not like this i can assure you. But it’s interesting to watch nonetheless. 👍

That actually very impressive. Really different from indonesia embu. The spacing this embu didnt care about spacing at all, just like real fight. When the time to hit they fix their spacing like a real fighter. Meanwhile in indonesia every move is kinda like notes and we follow those note, even the walking match the tick. Lockdown Just like real lockdown, we choke wait till they feel the pain then tap. Not like in indonesia when we play it like a song Rolling goddamn the rolling is very powerful, even the last move. Those kenshi stamina is really good. Very impressive! Thank you for uploading this video!

An interesting and very practical aspect of this defense is that he attacks the opponent holding the knife, not the knife itself, (other than a brief deflection). Many knife defense techniques are too focused on stopping and controlling the knife. The reality is that you should stay as far from the knife as possible. If you incapacitate the attacker, the knife is just a paper weight.

I've been told by a man, who actually DID defend himself a couple times from knife attacks, that the only way is to utterly focus on the weapon and the weapon hand. He said he would resign himself to being cut/stabbed and try to take control of the weapon as the first priority. He also agreed that you can train whatever you like, just keep in mind whatever you do could end with you dead in a second.

@@tomshepherd4901 Okay, so everybody has anecdotal evidence for this or that, but we can agree that in a thousand empty hand vs knife engagements, the knife is usually going to win. I grabbed a large balisong by the blade once and took it without injury. Mainly because the person holding it was hoping to scare me and was a complete cream puff. I wouldn't train a student to ever try that, and I was never advised to do that either.
@tomshepherd4901
@tomshepherd4901 4 күн бұрын
@@xyaeiounn Yes, we can absolutely agree that knife vs empty hand is very one sided in favor of the knife. There was a recent video in which a group of professional martial arts instructors and practitioners suited up and tried to defend themselves against 3 rounds of a simulated knife attack. Not a single one of them would have survived. My personal philosophy is 1) maintain distance. 2) get something between you and the knife. 3) use any available weapon, preferably something with reach. 4) cover your vitals. 5) as soon as you see the knife or the person closes range, attack the most vulnerable target and disarm or clear distance. It's easier to attack a slow moving face or knee than a fast moving blade. Also, rock beats scissors. 😁

Shorinji Kempo is a beautiful martial arts, it is grounded in great philosophy and provides the foundation for an amazing life due to its ZEN qualities. With that said, I don't think shorinji kempo is useful for self-defense or in a street fight. I only made it to green belt because my family moved to America, at which point I switched to JUDO and got my black belt about 5 years later. Until this day the few street fights I've encounter have ended with me doing some type of Judo throw or sweep. The problem is shorinji kempo isn't competitive, there are no tournaments and without that you never learn how to control your body in high stress situations. But if they did decide to have tournaments I can see shorinji kempo being as powerful as Kyokushin and Judo combined.

There are tournaments for Randori in Shorinji Kempo, their fight is limited with boxing gloves and body protector that can stop a knive attacks which is too thick.
@Juju-dt4fc
@Juju-dt4fc 5 ай бұрын
The problem with martial arts that offer tournaments is that they often fall into the "trap" of sporting drift, thus moving away from a true martial art preparing for combat. The goal is then to make hits to score points, the blows are no longer delivered with power, just quickly and superficially. This is not a bad thing in itself, as long as we are aware of what we are doing: a “combat sport” and not a “traditional martial art”.
@EugeakaEugene
@EugeakaEugene 3 ай бұрын
Here's where you are wrong, because Okinawan karate styles are not touched by sports/tournaments and it is enough for practitioners to do realistic sparrings (kumite) like Irikumi Go. You are wrong if you think legitimacy is only in tournaments

Your question is poorly framed. As mentioned above, it is descended from Northern Shaolin ch'uan fa. But to answer your question. The man makes the art. The art you diligently train in is the one that is most effective for you. Before determining which art you should pursue, you first need to determine your strengths and weaknesses. Kempo, like all good martial arts, contains within it strikes, joint locks, throws and kicks. All of which were performed here with genuine skill. Which do you have a natural inclination with? Once you find a path, stick with it for decades. Good luck on your journey. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association

There is actually no "best martial art" for self-defense, as @stefanschleps8758 says. There are many good martial arts, there are also some bad ones (I won't mention names :) ) which have lost over time the martial art, self-defense aspect, to just become sports (more or less popular on combat) but have lost any link with learning about real combat, are far too utopian, abstract, to properly prepare their practitioners. The important thing is not to know which is the "best martial art", the important thing is above all to choose a martial art that suits you, and to find a good teacher (here too you can come across bad ones), and it is perhaps ultimately better to have a good teacher of a “bad” martial art than a bad teacher of a “good” martial art ... If you do karate for example, it doesn't make sense to try to know which style is best between shotokan, goju ryu, etc. You just have to choose the style that attracts you and suits you, that's all. And come across a good teacher :). If you want to learn to defend yourself, you must also choose a school that practices a true traditional style, and not a club that practices a sport version intended for competition. From what I know, shorinji kempo draws part of its origins from Shaolin kung fu... like many current martial arts in fact. This is the case for several forms of karate, for example. But yes, from what I have seen in quite a few videos, from what I have read as an explanation, shorinji kempo seems close to certain styles of karate. In goju ryu for example, there are fist/foot strikes, but also locks, immobilizations, certain projections, pressure on nerve points, etc. It's very complete, very varied, etc. Many Japanese martial arts are very close to each other, due to their common origins (often Chinese: kung fu shaolin, kempo, etc.). The difference is often due to the "form" that the founder wanted to give them: training techniques, forms of kata (when there are any), mentality, rules of etiquette, etc.

tsuki power comes of hip rotation, followed by pulling the passive shoulder backward to give a reverse effect for the punch and much significant explosion. That's what Toyama Sensei taught us when he was in Indonesia. In karate they full the passive hand not the shoulder, which is called hikite. But in Shorinji Kempo and boxing, it's the passive shoulder that needs to be pulled back. Throwing jun tsuki without pulling the passive shoulder will only deliver weak tsuki.
