Side note, plot hole...I don't typically go looking for them but in a movie as meticulously put together as this one, it's still cool to find one. At around 4:35, if you look to the right of the door, there's a picture of the four brothers--in army uniforms, wearing helmets. Later in the movie, when Pvt. Ryan is telling Tom Hanks about the story with his brother in the hay loft with the girl, he said that that was the last time they were all four together in one place--that one of the brothers left for the Army the next day. So, they were never together since they all were in uniform. That photo could never have existed, since the four were never together while all were in the Army. Further, around 4:50, one of the officers told General Marshall that the 4 Ryan brothers were all in the same company in the 29th Division, but were split up after the Sullivan brothers all died aboard the USS Juneau when it sank. So, Ryan says they were never together after that one night. Kinda odd to see this kind of oversight. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7qliM-ErdGdgJs.html

She hears the dog , looks up, then back down. Then she stops. She knows that she does not get visitors. She looks over the netting and sees a civilian car, then sees the star. She knows that it is going to be bad news. One of her four sons has been killed. She has no idea that it is three of them. She walks slowly and stoically to the door, pauses for a moment , and then goes out on to the porch. The soldier steps out, and opens the rear door, and she sees the priest. Now she knows for certain , that she has lost a son. Maybe she realises that they would not send a car for one son , and the horror hits her that it might be more than one. Her knees give way, and her left hand shakes , as she reaches for support that isnt there. She slowly sinks to the porch floor as her mind goes numb . The two men bend down to comfort her. The scene ends before she gives that scream , that only a mother can. She acted it perfectly , an amazing recreation of real life. I do hope it was done in one take. It can not be improved up. I watched it again . From the moment she looked up from the washing bowl , until the scene ended, it was one minute. One minute that we watched in slow motion , second by second , know what was coming. If anyone ever wants to become an actor , watch this scene. It is perfect. Last thing. The actress is Amanda Boxer. Google her.

Nobody ever thinks of the wildlife that suffer endlessly from these wars. Wars they didn’t start. They don’t even know what’s going on. Humans have ravaged this entire planet. We should all be ashamed. We treat this planet like a litter box. We shit and piss all over the place then cover it up to mask the stinky mess we made

The actor who played George Marshall in this scene really went over and above in convincing us of the impact of their resolve to understand and locate and rescue Pvt. Ryan How he read the letter wrote by Abraham Lincoln and his body language says it all. A very intense and poignant moment that puts the search/rescue pursuit in context. Perhaps, as significant as when a dying Capt. Miller says to Ryan, "Earn This".

I don't know who played that mother in this scene, but I've never been more quickly moved to tears and heartbreak in my life. If there was EVER a realistic portrayal of the devastation of finding out you've lost even ONE son at war, much less 3, this woman portrayed it!! I can't even imagine!!

This scene makes me cry every time I see it. The acting of the mother is so real, when she sees her minister and her legs collapse, is perfectly acted. The general citing the letter from memory is also powerful. My grandfather survived the battle of the bulge, he lost of friends in the battle. He told me stories of what he lived through.

Dale Dye dropping his gaze at the mention of five brothers who died in action is a very subtle piece of performance - as much as this scene is about the speech, the performance of such active and reverent listening is what sells it

Note at 5:29 the officer talking about how the airborne got mis-dropped is Dale Dye, who ended up being cast as Col. Sink, the commander of the 506th airborne division, in Band of Brothers. Hanks must have liked his short appearance here.
