It’s an invisible wall. For 50 years, physicists have puzzled over why some radar signals sent skywards bounce back 150 kilometres above the ground. It now seems it is down to vibrating electrons. The bounceback was first seen in 1962, shortly after atmospheric scientists installed a large radar system outside Lima in Peru. The echo appears daily in a well-defined pattern, turning up high in the sky at dawn and descending by about 20 kilometres during the morning. At noon, the phenomenon flips its course and ascends throughout the evening until the sun sets and it disappears entirely (see picture below). More recent research shows that it grows stronger during solar flares and fades during solar eclipses. For years, a mysterious signal has been picked up at altitude as radar bounces off something unknown Chau and Kudeki, 2013 “You get them every day. We have no idea what they’re there for. That’s unusual,” says David Hysell an atmospheric scientist at Cornell University, who was not involved in this research. “If you make pictures of the echoes they’re incredibly detailed.” Frothy waves To investigate these echoes, Meers Oppenheim and Yakov Dimant of Boston University made a computer model of the upper atmosphere that used a thousand processors simultaneously and took the better part of a year to run. The model showed how ultraviolet light from the sun strips electrons from oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the upper atmosphere. The loose electrons vibrate, generating waves that ripple through the electrons and the oxygen and nitrogen ions. “They’re not ferociously strong waves,” says Oppenheim. “They are more like the froth on the top of water when a heavy wind blows over it.” But they are strong enough to reflect radar beams. Given the changes seen during solar flares and eclipses, it seems obvious in hindsight that the waves are solar-driven, he says. The results shed light on a part of the atmosphere that is difficult to monitor: above where planes and balloons can fly, but below where satellites can orbit. Hysell is already thinking about experiments to test Oppenheim and Dimant’s simulation. For such a hard-to-reach region, the only option he sees is to launch a rocket - an experiment that is expensive and fun, he says. “It’s really an adrenaline rush that you don’t get by any other k

@eventcone 4 күн бұрын
Dust does not "take time to settle" - unless it's settling in a dense atmosphere. So, in no atmosphere it just falls at the same rate as everything else, as per the local gravitational constant. Which is precisely what happens to it on the Moon.
@narajuna

The smaller the particle, the longer it stays in the air and the further it can travel. A dust particle's size and the stillness of the air can determine how long it may stay in the air. Some nasa official Truth, of just non falling🤓> *What causes the abundance of dust to 'float' in the thin lunar atmosphere?* Several missions to the Moon have revealed a lunar horizon glow, such as the ones seen below by the spacecraft Surveyor 7 in 1968: According to the NASA article "Model Helps Search for Moon Dust Fountains" written in 2010 suggests the cause of the phenomenon is due to sunlight shining *through a dust layer suspended in the very thin atmosphere (exosphere) of the moon.* 😲 From the NASA webpage: "It has been suggested that electrostatic forces play a role in the ejection of dust from the lunar surface, and its dynamics in the atmosphere, but we really don’t understand how it gets there in such high abundances." 🤭

During interviews over the past couple of days, the ground commander for China's lunar mission mentioned, "We haven't found, uh, that, uh, that, uh," referring to the Apollo crater. Then, he couldn't help but burst into laughter. While he didn't outright say that the first human moon landing was fake, anyone with half a brain knows what he was getting at. - I wonder if he was from Past Era, pre internet period? Pragmatic Manager? Some uncontrol, not like these guys....

Apollo Crater is an impact basin with a diameter of more than 500 km on the far side of the moon, nowhere near any of the Apollo landing sites. It is the intended target for Chang’e 6. If the Chinese can’t find a crater that large, the mission would be in big trouble. In reality though, they’re on track for landing in the basin. So, as usual, you’re not making sense.
@narajuna
@narajuna 4 күн бұрын
How old is the Apollo crater? Also, while the radiogenic dates have a wide age range between 3.6-4.2 billion years, our crater counting calculates the Apollo 17 landing site to be around 4 billion years old. 😉
@Hobbes746

According to a press release on the study, during the Apollo moon landings in the early 1970s, some astronauts' suits were damaged due to stubborn moon dust, destroying the seals that keep the oxygen in and the toxic space environment out. Others even suffered from a newly coined disease, lunar hay fever, after being exposed to moon dust over a short period of time. - yet the smart Apollo Knowers say falls fast, all because of those amusing fallings?

You'd think if they faked it they could've hired better actors or at least gave them acting lessons. There's probably a reason they hired the best test pilots in the country for this. On top of that you'd think maybe nerdy ass engineers with incredible stressful and traumatic lives wouldn't be the most charismatic people. And you'd think maybe if you experienced the most intense and life changing journey a human can possibly experience you would feel humbled and still be processing it for years to come instead of just be happy and laugh it off like it was nothing. You'd think after all that you probably wouldn't have the energy to act all joyful while getting bombarded by the press 24/7 while you thought you'd finally have time to spend with your family again.
