The boats were made of wood and the men made of steel. It was a hard life.

Great video! Lots of memories there for me as I was born in Lowestoft in 1945 and as I grew up there were still lots of those old wooden fishing boats working out of the port. Over the years they were gradually replaced by the larger steel vessels then the industry slowly died with the scarcity of herring and the fishing restrictions in Icelandic waters. Lots of my school mates went to sea but it wasn’t for me, it was well paid but a very hard, and dangerous way to make a living.

Sad to see those old ladies being left to rot. What is really needed is something like the railway and canal groups to rescue as many as possible otherwise we’ll look round and they’ll be gone.

Great video of lovely open decked boats. At 1:11 the D513 is the Janette Ann our family trawler that my dad JackBates had built new in 1969. I was skipper of her from 1980 until dad retired. Still going at 97 and never misses the forecast (just in case). Thank you for sharing this. 🎉❤

I sail a small sailing cruiser on the River Blackwater in Essex, I was once in among the Sailing Smack Race (I kept well away) as these fast powerful boats were sailed to the limit they looked absolutely stunning with their powerful rigs.. Made even the fastest Motor Gin Palace look mediocre.

You choose the perfect song. I get goosebumps by seeing these beautiful ships and listening to this song. Just perfect. In my younger years I've been working on a wooden beam trawler fishing for shrimp. Love your channel. Greetings from the Netherlands
