@@GracevilleMN Nice machine, I didn't mean to sound critical. I think it would be nice if there were a way to make a variable resistance cartridge, it probably be very linear and no hum issues. Maybe someone a lot smarter than I am could do that someday? Thanks for not taking offence to my comment.

Why did they make the stylus’s so damn big?
@GracevilleMN
@GracevilleMN 2 ай бұрын
Hello! Good Question! I figure you're wondering about the entire tone arm. The tone arm looks a lot heavier than it is. The underside is hollow, and there's a rather large counterweight on the pivot end. Using a small digital scale it shows about 4.16 ounces while in operation. I use cactus thorn needles exclusively with this. Record wear seems minimal, and I can easily play 6 or 7 sides before re-sharpening the point. Thanks for watching!

Am I wrong or could you set this to play the same stack repeatedly?
@GracevilleMN
@GracevilleMN 2 ай бұрын
Actually you're completely right regarding continuous repeating of the stack until stopped by the operator. There's no automatic shutoff except when single sides are played with the changer set to "manual" mode. Thanks for question!

Just wonderful! What a true hybrid. The sensing of record sizes is amazing. The tossing the records aside was only done very early in record changer history, fortunately. I have a 1974 RCA Victrola console; the last year for the 2 towers letting the records down. BTW, Victor Ortho-phonic reproducers are terrific sounding, getting everything out of the new, electrically recorded records of the late-20s day.

What about changing the needle?
@GracevilleMN
@GracevilleMN 10 ай бұрын
Victor recommended using its "Chromium" needles, rated by the company to play multiple sides for these changers. In my opinion these needles caused more wear than the earlier VictrolaTungs-Tone variety. Thanks for your question!

Yes, this speed was an early attempt to market a longer playing record, but not really successful until re-introduced by Columbia Records with its microgroove and vinyl format post WW II. Thanks for your question!

Too bad that it doesn't do 33&1/3 rpm, but who needs em' when this plays and changes the 78's so well? So glad you posted and i'm also a native Minnesotan! Greetings from Tennessee!

It truly ia amazing as to how beautiful the sound is, despite there being no electronics involved in the reproduction. That exponential horn abd the HMV reproducer really bring out the best of those electrically recorded records. Since steel needles are only good for one play, what sort of stylus is used for a machine like this? The one here looks looks a bit like the tungs-tone needle, if my memory of the pictures I've seen isat all accurate (that statement should tell you much about what I know about this part of antique phonographs.) Thanks for the wonderful music!
@GracevilleMN
@GracevilleMN 11 ай бұрын
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the questions. These automatic gramophones were designed to be used with the Tungs-tone multi-play needles as you mentioned. For this demonstration, however, a cactus thorn needle was used. With good unworn records you can play many sides before the needle needs to be re-sharpened, much like a pencil point. In my opinion the natural cactus thorn is gentler on the records and can be re-sharpened many times before it becomes too short for use. Thanks for your comments!
