Please If I have a clinical experience like an OD, is it possible for me to get admission into a lab based research like Immunology? Even though I took courses in immunology and few lab courses in undergrad but I lack laboratory experience, is it possible?

Hey Casey .... How valuable is an MPhil from Australia in the US ? Is it better to have MS or MPhil ? Just want your thoughts on these

Hmmm I don't think that it makes sense to ask about a country... a good degree from X country is more valuable than a bad degree from Y country. And what kind of degree completely depends on your goals and field and lots of things specific to you!

What is a "low" publication?
@MohammedAminu-m8e
@MohammedAminu-m8e 5 күн бұрын
Please I think there were some typo errors which made the question not clear. I meant if a prospective PI has a low number of recent publications. Could an applicant to grad school consider this a red flag? Furthermore, could a PI be asked a reason for that in an interview, in case there is a strong research area alignment? Thanks for your feedback.
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 4 күн бұрын
So I think what you're asking is if as a PhD applicant you should take into account publication record when thinking about who you might want to be your advisor? Sure, though there are other things you might want to consider as well. For your question about an interview, are you asking if, as the applicant, you should ask a faculty member why they haven't been publishing more? I guess you could after you've been admitted and are trying to make a decision, but even then I certainly wouldn't recommend asking it like that. "Why aren't you publishing more?" is pretty rude, and the more appropriate question would be to ask about current research goals and plans.

@CaseyFieslerPhD, Ethics and security should be incorporated in all CS classes. The challenge with ethics may be it's limitations to laws as opposed to cultural, religious, or personal values. Ethics is a part of philosophy. How do people determine moral conduct? Without an ethical anchor, this is going to be a challenge. At my Christian institution, this is still a challenge but at least their is a faith-based place start. However, security must also be incorporated in all CS classes - ethics and security go hand-in-hand. BTW, I will incorporate both ethics and security into the programming courses I teach.

Hi Casey, I didn't get into any of the PhD programs I applied to so I am trying masters. So I have a doubt . In the US which candidate has a higher chance of getting a PhD admission, a MPhil degree holder or MS degree holder?
@CaseyFieslerPhD
@CaseyFieslerPhD 19 күн бұрын
That obviously depends on the field but I also don’t think that an application is inherently stronger by having a masters degree at all; if you have a masters degree it’s just more likely that your application is stronger in other ways like more experience, better letters of rec, etc.

I’ve been out of college for a year now, and I’m applying to grad schools. Because I was in college during Covid and struggled with my mental health significantly during my last years of undergrad, I rarely had an in person or close relationship with any professors. I got a 3.67 GPA, studied abroad, graduated with honors, was in a sorority, coached for a nonprofit, and was engaged academically and socially, but I know no professors closely enough for them to remember me outside of me being an A student. The only ones I could think of responded that they were too busy to write a letter of recommendation. Im going to keep asking but it’s so demoralizing to be a first gen student with no understanding and very little means of applying for these things after putting in so much work in undergrad. Thanks for the information, I hope I’m able to get my 3 letters.

Especially if you’re considering Masters programs, just do the best you can! I remember admitting a student where one of their letters of rec was from the manager of a grocery store they worked at. This is something committees understand if you’ve been out of school for a while. (You should also see if there’s someone from the nonprofit who could just explain what you did there!)

I have always had a fear of professors. Why? because I have seen videos and heard rumours about them having legal rights to intimidate/bully and verbally abuse their students if they are not meeting their expectations when it comes to school work. Yes, we all had bad teachers in our academic careers, but some of my teachers in high school told me that professors are 10 times more strict that regular school teachers, which caused me to be afraid of them. I know, they are people just like us, but the thing that makes be terrified of professors is their academic freedom and tenure positions. I fear that these stick in their mind and they think they can do anything they want to their students without losing their job. that's a huge reason why I am terrified to go to college. in cinema, television, literature, and other forms of media about college, they would sometimes portray the professor as a bully to the students, which is another reason why I'm very scared of them. other silly stereotypes that I believed in where the fact that professors get annoyed if you ask questions during class, I don't know if office hours are just to ask questions relating to the class or if you need help/tutoring with school assignments or if you need help to study for a test or exam like regular teachers do. I'm not saying your are scary just because you are a professor, it's just that I have been trying my hardest to figure out if professors can act like normal teachers, support wise. for example, caring about students needs and struggles, respecting and being kind to students, offering help with academic work, getting to know their students as individuals, of course, professors are just normal people, but I was always terrified of a person's job title or position because I deeply fear that the person with a very high position like a university professor has the freedom to do anything they want to the student. most college students are very stressed because of the intense and strict pressure their professors put on them based on their academic performence. now I have learned that these scary thoughts I had are not true at all. I hope one day I can go to college and just remind myself that professors are basically teachers with a higher position and has other duties besides teaching. and I will always remind myself that they want you to succeed in your academics, they want to help you learn new things, they want to get to know you, and best of all, they want to see you just being yourself. I know that's not always the case, but it would be very nice for students to have a positive college experience.

Our program expects a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to be considered for admission. The average GPA of admitted students is significantly higher. We typically interview ~10 to 15 applicants and accept 8 to 10, based on funds. I cannot recall an applicant that was accepted without research experience. All admitted students are guaranteed 5 years of funding from the program. All admitted students are required to do two to three rotations, even if they are certain which lab they will join. It is surprising how many people who fought against doing rotations end up changing their minds. I selected my mentor based on lab culture. People in the lab knew who to make life in the lab fun. I viewed my thesis research as a way to keep myself busy while I went about the process of learning enough about the field. so that I could make an informed decision about my postdoc.
