After all this time I think Garry was at first a little on guard and Ricky was too overly familiar, but at the end they were fine after they both relaxed. Still laugh when Garry asks the guy over the phone if he knows who Ricky is 😂😂😂
@TCBElvisAPresleyАй бұрын
I love both of these guys, and I kind of "get" what they were trying to do here, but I didn't think it was terribly funny. It would have been much better if they hadn't carried on with the bit for the whole show.¹ I kept waiting for them to stop and be real, but it never happened. Do you suppose this tension and apparent dislike was planned? Maybe they talked ahead of time, and one said "hey, wouldn't it be funny if..." Either way, the result isn't what I'd call comedy gold. ¹ _Edit --- I read in the comments that this was edited. So hopefully the whole show wasn't this bad. I see the whole show is available in 5 parts, so I'm gonna check that out._

Shandling seems genuinely annoyed in this and retaliates in a passive aggressive manner. I don’t think it’s an act. Something Ricky did before the cameras went on must have triggered him but not clear what it is. Ricky also seems quizzical and unsure of the tone.

Here's the real story: Shandling had been struck by the idea that Gervais would be a great addition. Though he’d never appeared on the show, Gervais had spoken openly about how Sanders inspired him. So Garry called Gervais and asked if he’d do it. The answer was yes, but Gervais also had a request. While he was in Garry’s home, could they also shoot his Channel 4 show? Shandling agreed, and all was well until the day of the dueling interviews, when wires got crossed. Garry says he assumed they would shoot the “visit” for the DVD extra first, because “that laid-back, not-on tone is good preparation for saying, ‘Let’s turn it on'” later, for Gervais’s special. But when Shandling walked into his kitchen, he realized instantly that Gervais thought the Channel 4 special was being shot first. Gervais was on-extremely so-and so were several cameras. Garry could have said something but wanted to see what would happen if he played it out. What if he stayed in the same low-affect head space he was in to do his DVD extras? Could he reach Gervais without explicitly identifying the problem? Could he bring Gervais’s energy level down? “It’s fascinating, really,” Garry tells me. “We both became locked into the shows we were each doing, and it became a bit of a boxing match. Because he’s trying to get me to do the show that he needs, and I’m trying to get him to do nothing. I was trying to pull Ricky into the moment.”

A few things are happening here. 1 - People upset that Ricky refuses to play make belief with mentally ill people think this interview is a big gotcha moment. 2 - Literal racist people saying this is bad because Shandling is Jewish. 3 - Everyone not understanding that this is a bit in which Shandling was purposely being what he calls down. 4 - Everyone not understanding that this bit, has been edited down to only include the awkward moments. The only thing embarrassing is the people in these comments that are not very smart.

I believe this is a man doing everything he can to demonstrate "i am smarter than you" with actually saying it. Bit eccentric but probably wanted to humble Gervais a bit

Shandling and his peers fit the description of Woody Allen that Orson Welles gave in an interview. "I hate Woody Allen physically, I dislike that kind of man. I can hardly bear to talk to him. He has the Chaplin disease. That particular combination of arrogance and timidity sets my teeth on edge. He is arrogant. Like all people with timid personalities, his arrogance is unlimited. Anybody who speaks quietly and shrivels up in company is unbelievably arrogant. He acts shy, but he’s not. He’s scared. He hates himself, and he loves himself, a very tense situation. It’s people like me who have to carry on and pretend to be modest. To me, it’s the most embarrassing thing in the world-a man who presents himself at his worst to get laughs, in order to free himself from his hang-ups. Everything he does on the screen is therapeutic." Just another coincidence.

Somebody please explain me how is Shandling in sort of upper position here and not Gervais? Because I think the opposite. Gervais justifies everything he says and often here (like everywhere) easily gets the last word unlike Shandling here. Shandling even says when pouring coffee to himself that I think what we have proven here probably doesn't need to be proven anymore... and says how certain type of comedy comes from tragedy and suffering... although Gervais has just earlier explained how it's complitely not that at all. So nothing what Shandling says "have been proven there" doesn't add. So why do most of commenters here think so? In a nutshell Shandling maybe 😂 doesn't like Gervais's style but Ricky does only defends himself with his words he doesn't attack Shandling. And Shandling is sort of attacking Gervais because he maybe doesn't like him that much.

It's a very different interview if someone actually watches the whole thing. This is edited in a way that you get the impression Garry is constantly trolling Gervais and makes him uncomfortable. If you watch the complete interview, Gervais is genuinely interested, Garry gives some great insights and stories and throws a few playful jabs here and there. Great interview, if you watch the whole thing.

This interview kind of reminds me of the dynamic that Letterman had with his guests. At times he likes to put them on edge which is quite common among some interviewers. He will ask his guest about the thing that they for sure don't want to talk about like when he interviewed Paris Hilton and of course brought up some scandal to more or less make her feel uncomfortable and then someone like Joaquin Phoenix comes to the show and flips the script back onto letterman and making him feel uncomfortable. This was just a couple of examples that immediately came to mind. After making this comment, I'm not sure how many people will get these references. I guess I've watched too many interviews. I've heard Apatow comment on this part of his documentary and from what I got from it was that Garry was sincerely pissed that he walked into his own kitchen only to find cameras immediately rolling without being informed beforehand. Also, this may have all been already addressed in the comments below but I'm too lazy to sift through them all.

Ì think Ricky was nervous and afraid of saying the wrong thing which he then appears to do when Gary walks in. I think he lies about seeing him walk in but to Ricky it was a white lie to mask over having potentially offending his host, which he then proceeds to do. ( just like a real life Basil Fawlty ) . This sums up the problems a lot of comedians have with Ricky Gervais . Stand ups are a different breed than comedy actors. The shit stand ups have to go through gives them a skin so thick they have problems donating blood. Ricky didn’t come up through the clubs. He did a bit of radio , jumped into TV ( which is what he’s good at ) and then just strolls into the stand up scene. His stand up is , by any measure , bad. Very bad. In stand up there is a paradoxical world of competitiveness accompanied with an undying respect between comics. Gervais is just not one of them and for that matter either is Russell Brand . To quote Will Self when talking of Nigel Farage , they are grubby little opportunists.
