My favorite setup so far. I feel like a rocket with that setup, but still able to ride for a long while without being too exhausted! Also the NCX is incredible when overpowered, it still feels comfy. I was able to switch directly from my 6.5 to my 4.7 over the weekend without going with a 5.5. Also, would love to hear/see videos about the setup to learn freestyle, like things to keep in mind for beginner freestyle. Always a treat to see you freestyle in Avon, and I still have troubles (although getting much better) riding with the foot straps inside. I find it particularly difficult to pop if I don't have my heel on the edge of the board.

I'm glad you are liking the setup! For Freestyle, the Psycho is the way to go for the board. With outboard straps, you can jump, but you can't pop.. when popping the board durning a trick we're standing up straight as opposed to leaning back against the sail for a jump. More like a skateboard or snowboard. Ocean Air has Psychos in the demo fleet to try out. VERY different board from the Fox though. Happy to provide some freestyle entertainment for you :-) It's such a blast and an incredible feeling to land a trick clean. I always like a new challenge and wih freestyle, the next challenge is always waiting for me. Rip it up! Mike

Has the new 2024 NCX more low end power than the 2023 and comparable to the Gator at low end?
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 3 ай бұрын
Hi @christopht.5649 The new NCX does have a bit more on both the low end and the high end compared to the previous NCX. The Gator is still the sail with the best low end. Remember, the purpose of the NCX is speed similar to a slalom sail. The Gator is the more all around freeride sail with more power.

In previous years has the NCX been a slalom sail? I thought it was more aimed at the freeride style...?
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 4 ай бұрын
The previous NCX was also built for max speed without cams. Very loose leech like slalom sails and the new NCX. I also owned the previous NCX. I had no problem keeping up with guys on PWA level race sails in a straight line while fullly powered. The cammed sails do excel in the lulls and overpowering gusts. The NCX blurs the line between a cammed slalom sail and a no-cam freeride sail. The NCX is based off the Mach race sails . They are slalom sails without cams. Without cams, they become incredibly user friendly and light handling. The large Gators are the more classic freeride saills with more power on the low end. Plenty of stability for the average windsurfer looking to get going in lighter winds and the Gator is the easiest jibing.

How is NCX for foiling in low winds? Thinking of the 7.5 for 8-14 kts on the foil and 14-18kts on the fin.
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 4 ай бұрын
Hi Brent, The NCX was specifically designed for the fin and is very, very good on the fin. It is possible to use virtually any sail on a foil. The experience on the foil won't be as nice as something like a Foilglide or a tighter leeched sail, but it can be done. The tighter leeched, foil specfic sails are more powerful and balanced specifically to foil. So the short answer is, yes, an NCX can be used to foil, however it won't have such a locked in feel like a foilglide would have on the foil.

Thanks Mike! Please create a video about the rigging of the larger freeride Gators! I heart that the batten above the boom should just be at the outter end of the mast and Not moving towards the mid of the mast diameter or even further towards the sails. Is that correct? Thanks Chris

How do you decide between the NCX and the Moto? I've always liked the effieciency of at least a few cams. What sizes would you recommend for 22-30 kniots when I'm not foiling? Cheers Rich.
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 5 ай бұрын
Hi Rich, Both sails have very good speed and similar low end. The Moto is a bit more controlled and locked in at the top end. While I'm reaching similar top speeds with both the Moto and NCX, I can hold that top speed longer with the Moto. The Moto has better speed upwind. With the Moto, it's always turned on, meaning it always wants to keep pushing similar to a full PWA slalom sail. The NCX is easier to depower without the cams which some people like. The NCX seems to power up quicker exiting the jibe without the cams needing to ratate first. NCX is easier to rig. Just downhaul and outhaul. Go withe the Moto if you want an easier handling and lighter PWA sail like the Mach. Fastest from point A to point B. Go with the NCX if you wanr easier handling sail that can be immediately depowered if something gets a bit out of control, and better jibing. Still, it will be a close call as the better sailor will likely win the drag race or slalom course on either sail. These are both very fast sails built specifically to blow past everyone else on the water. How much do you weigh? That will help determine the sail sizes. I'm 195 lbs and use my Moto 6.8 starting at 18-20 mph and can hold it down into the upper 20s. 22mph is perfect for me with the 6.8. 5.8 would be my sail for 24-28. 5.4 when it's 30 mph. Depends on your weight and ability. How much power do you really want to hold down? The overall wind range is insane between the point where you can get planing and the point where it's no longer possible to control the rig. Hope that helps, Mike

I see that your preference is the wet suit? I wonder if you would comment on reasons for making that choice. I spend a lot of time at the NC coast so I know the winter water temps. Thank you for your time.
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 5 ай бұрын
Hi Tommy, It depends on the temps. We get many days throughout the winter on the Outer Banks with temps in the 50s or warmer. Today for example is blowing 20-30 mph and it's 60 degrees...... Any decent 4/3 blindstitched and glued wetsuit should do with temps over 50 degrees. These types of suits are water tight except for the neck, ankles and wrists. Same as drysuits. We should be sure to note that not all wetsuits are created even close to equal. The Severne Primo is a top of the line suit that uses only the very top tier fabrics available and is glued and blind stitched. It's warmer and stretchier than any other 4/3 I've ever owned. I can take this suit down to 40 degree air temps with open palm mitts, boots and a hood. Compared to a basic wetsuit like an Ion Element, or O'neill Epic, these top end suits are significantly warmer and stretchier at the same time. If I owned a 4/3 low end suit, I most certainly would choose a drysuit. I do own a couple drysuits as well but I always prefer a wetsuit when I'm not wearing gloves and a hood. When we don't wear a hood with a drysuit the water enters the suit through the neck when you fall and it's a bit of a stun every time. Doing freestyle, I crash a lot. In a wetsuit, water leaks in the first time through the neck as well, but then it's warm after that first fall because the wetsuit traps the water against your body and heats it up. This is the primary reason I prefer a wetsuit when air temps are above 40-45 degrees. A good drysuit will totally keep the water out, but only when you're wearing a hood and mitts overlapping the neck and wrist seals. Since I live here on the Out Banks full time, I tend to simply wait of days above 40-45 degrees when my 4/3 works just fine. I haven't put on the drysuit in about 6 years. If the air temps dip down into the 30s, I just wait a couple days until the temps warm up again above 40-45 degrees for the wetsuit. Hope that helps.

Best time of year for Hatteras is April through mid-July and October. Shallow water with small chop similar to Bonaire's water conditions, but we have gradient winds from passing systems, not tradewinds. I've been to Bonaire 14 times, at least 2 weeks per trip. You will likely sail more days in Bonaire if you have a 7.0, but Hatteras definitely has more windy days for a 4.8, 4.4 or smaller.

What is the deal with the Enigma 160 which is recommended for all sizes of this sail? For the 8.4 this would be at maximum extension, is that a good idea? Also the 160 Enigma is advertised having an SDM boom head, are you replacing it with an RDM for the Moto, or using an adapter?
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 8 ай бұрын
Hi Eedeepee, The Enigma 160 is actually available now with either SDM or RDM head right from the factory, so it depends on how the shop ordered the boom. I will have the guys update the Website. The full head can be swapped relatively easily, but the only piece that's different between the SDM and RDM head is the plastic "cup" that the mast sits in. This is only a $10.00 part. I have personally used SDM Enigma heads on RDM masts and they work ok, but having the correct boom head is absolutely incredible! As someone once told me, "If we didn't think that it was ok to use our boom fully extended, it wouldn't have that long of an extension."

Once both sets of testers agree that the board is the best on the market, AND an improvement from the previous model, only then does it go to production.

I liked this video. And thanks for posting your experience. You said you can use the Blade in bump and jump conditions. Does the sail have any profile when it is powered up? Does it have "controllable" momentum (meaning the power delivery to the board smooth or not)? I remember sailing with an Ezzy wave sail long ago. The sail rigged like a door on the beach, and it was still like a door (maybe a slight profile) when powered up. It was the most gutless sail that I have ever owned, and sold it within the same month. I personally like Gator. Any similarity of Blade to Gator? Thanks again.
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 11 ай бұрын
The Gator has a bit more seam shaping compared to the Blade, so the Gator is a bit more powerful and locked in compared to the Blade. The Blade does also get some shape under power however the profile is a bit flatter than the Gator. The 2022 Blade has a bit deeper profile under power than the 2023 Blade since the 2022 has the dacron panel next to the mast to let the sail inflate a bit deeper under power. The power delivery on both the Blade and Gator is very smooth. The Blade will be a bit more maneuverable than the Gator. The Gator will have a bit more power. Both work great for bump and jump. If you want a more reactive sail get the Blade. If you want a bit more power and locked in feel, then the Gator. I agree, the Ezzy's will be on the water what they are off the water. Either flat and no power but can maneuver ok, or powerful but awful for jibing and maneuvers with very little feedback form the rig. Severne sails build profile under power which lets the sail set into a locked position under power, yet go relatively flat and depower for maneuvers and control. Best of both worlds, just tuned differently depending on what the rider's main focus is between the Blade and Gator.

@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica Жыл бұрын
Hi Vyle Art, this depends on what tricks you want to learn. The Makani Koi Weed is hands down the best freestyle weed fin on the market. I personally use the 15 cm Koi Weed which allows for multiple spins without the fin catching too much. The 17cm Koi weed has more grip and power. This 17cm fin is great for single spin tricks like Spocks, flakas etc, but adding a second spin on the 17cm is difficult without popping the board twice to clear the fin again on the second rotation. The 17cm is the fin that most folks going for their first freestyle weed fin find comfortable to use. For blasting, my wife uses a 23 cm Makani Mano and likes it a lot. There would be a few good fin options from a few different brands for just blasting on the Psycho 3 to turn it into a FAST, early planing bump and jump board. ***When adding a weed fin, remember to bump the mast base back 1 -2 cm in the mast track to account for the weed fin and make the board feel closer to it does with the standard fin!*** Enjoy your Pscyho 3! It is absolutely incredible!

@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica
@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Patrick! It's good to hear some different opinions. One thing that you need to keep in mind is that Severne is a 100% windsurf focussed brand with absolutely no interest in compromising any windsurf performance to fulfill any type of crossover sport needs. Windsurfing has the unique ability to adjust the balance point of the foil by moving the mast base around where as with winging, surfing and kiting, moving the foil is the only way to adjust the balance point. This is why the vast majority of dedicated windsurf foil boards use the tuttle / foil box. Tracks are an ongoing controversy. So many windsurf users prefer the tuttle box / foil box for ease of use while at the same time others want to bring their current foil setup from one of the brands that crossover into different sports and don't specifically focus on windsurfing the way Severne does. Personally, I owned a board in the past that had both tracks and a tuttle box. I went through he hassle of using the tracks once and ended up putting the foil in the same exact spot that the tuttle box was placed. Since the tuttle box was so much easier to set up, I never used the tracks again. That said, I do understand why people would want to have tracks on the board. From a board building perspective, it's a matter of trading off the lightest possible weight, and therefore the best possible performance (which is quite a WOW factor of the Predator) and satisfying a small portion of the windsurf market that requests tracks. Adding tracks would definitely add some weight to the board. Personally, when given the option, I much prefer the tuttle / foil box since I've never felt a need to move the foil at all on the Predator and it saves me significant time setting up the kit since I need to take the foil off the board after every session. There's also no need at all for a full deck pad since the rider is in the footstraps 100% of the time on the Predator. Tracks would have a purpose whereas a full deck pad would only add weight for no real reason. If you can, give the Predator a try. I've been demoing my 110 ltr to quite a few people here in Hatteras. This board probably gets the most consistently great feedback compared to any windsurf board I've ever let people try. Right along side the Severne Fox. People absolutely LOVE the Predator after trying it.... All the best, Mike

@@severnewindsurfingnorthamerica Hello Mike, Thank you very much for your detailed answer. You are right, light weight is very important for a foilboard. But i think tracks are the future especially for freestyle foil boards. Ok, severne has only one foil and this is with tuttle. So it is clear that a severne foilboard comes with tuttle box. But there are other foils out there with plate. I have moses/sab and several wing/stab sizes. Foiling with them with my alien 120 shows up that i need to move the foil back and forth a bit to get balanced. Maybe the redwing is balanced with all wings and stabs, i do not know. But having a plate to move the foil and not change the strap position would be very nice. For me a freestyle foilboard should have only tracks, no tuttle anymore. So the weight would stay the same as like the tuttle version. With full deck pad i mean it should be one piece in the area where i put my feet. Not over the front of the front straps. This little bit more eva stuff should not bring much extra weight to the board. But it would be much more skin friendly. I will give the predator a try at the lake silvaplana exhibition in august if they bring a 110.I tested the alien last year and then ordered one and am very happy with it. Cheers Patrick

@@Sixthflyer Thanks again for the feedback. I do think it is something that Severne should reconsider. Right now, the Severne boards are really well balanced for the full range of Severne foils and wings. The 1400 front and 350 rear and they say that the 1000 front wing with the 250 rear wing are nicely balanced. I just received my 250 rear wing, so I still have yet to try it, but I'll report back when I do. I think Severne needs to make the decision if they want to adapt the boards to 3rd party foils. Personally, if tracks were added, I'd still want the tuttle box on the Predator even with the added weight. I honestly wouldn't see myself using the tracks at all since I have the Redwing kits and have never had any point riding it where I felt that I needed to move the foil or footstraps. We'll see what develops in Severne's foil range as it expands. Perhaps with more foils coming out, and more guys rotating in the air, Severne will see the need for tracks in the future. Let us know what you think of the Predator. it really has me eager to get out and foil and run through some 360s, try to foil away from helitacks, see how many times I can spin the sail during duck jibes, etc. Just good fun!!!

Hi Mike, Do you think the Cyclops 36 extension can be used on the 32 setting without bending? I have a Severne Red 100% carbon rdm 400 mast and have a chance of a bargin on a 5.6m2 Severne 2020 Freek which has 432 cm luff. Would i need to get the carbon fibre Cyclops to be sure it wouldn't bend ? I've tried this idea on other sails with a cheap 45cm rdm aluminium extension on about 30 cm - 35 cm setting and a slight bend developed so the extension couldn't be used shorter after that - until i cut the top off.

Hi Z! I've used the Cyclops and other carbon extensions at max extension. They were all fine. Carbon doesn't bend like a cheap aluminum extension could. You'll be fine at 32 cm extension. The 5.6 Freek is actually the sail I would use the 400 + 32 cm extension on... I also use my carbon Cyclops at 30cm extension for my 5.2 often. No issues at all. Thanks, MIke

what about for using with windfoil?

There would appear to be at least 3 issues using this product not mentioned. Sail pulleys must be oriented in the correct direction. There must be adequate clearance above pulleys for loop to fit. Finally, the force required to downhaul is much greater because there is one less set of pulleys. I do not think this would work on high tension race sails without needing a lot of strength. Some race sails have 4 pulleys, needing 3 pulleys on the extension.

Hi David, The Cyclops is optimized for Severne Windsurfing Wave and Freeride sails like the Blade, Freek, S-1, Redback and Gator. It also only comes in an RDM version which kinda hints that it's not meant toward race sails. This is not a race extension. You are correct that it would be difficult to downhaul a sail that requires much more tension like an NCX or Overdrive. For normal tension sails like a Freek, Gator or Blade, its' really not that difficult to downhaul the sail in comparison to typical 2 pulley extension. Just use your left foot! For optimal use, Severne leaves enough clearance above the tack pulley to pass the rope through since the 2018 model year sails. The Cyclops can easily be used with sails that don't have enough room to pass the rope through by simply undoing the knot in the handle which makes the line just like an old fashioned downhaul line. You'd pass the rope one way and then back again at the tack pulley. Still much faster to rig and de-rig, but you'll lose the handle. I have not been able to try out this extension on a sail with pulleys aligned differently. I have however seen the extension specifically made for pulleys aligned in the other direction used on Severne Freeks and while it wasn't optimal, the user was still able to get the sail downhauled within 3cm or so of the block . All in all, if someone owns a 2018 or newer Freek, S-1, Blade, or Gator, I wouldn't even second guess the Cyclops. It's just so easy... I used to only hav one cyclops and cringe when I had to grab the old style extension to rig up my wife and kids. Now, cyclops extensions for the whole family. All the best, Mike

Head over to Big Winds and ask the boys for Severne. Big Winds does have some Severne gear on order. While they are waiting for it to arrive, they can get you something we have in stock at one of our warehouses. The volume is really high right now so orders for gear that we have in stock are taking about 2 weeks to leave the warehouse. Thanks, Mike
