I heard that you want the truck to pull a little to the right in case the driver falls asleep at the wheel the can go off the road so it won't go into on coming traffic or hit traffic in the left hand lane

Rear axles are always 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 of center for torsion. If they were perfectly centered, which is not possible because of the leaf spring hole and center dowel on axle, then the truck will push either left or right and your torsion bars will wear out almost immediately. Take caution. I would take the truck to a pro and not some shade tree so called technician.

Outstanding Information , from Santa and his Little Helpers . Great video . Well done . String-line is the tried and tested method for Motorcycles as well .

My front axel is 3/16 forward on the right side but the truck pulls hard to the right when loaded. Not so much when empty. I dropped a plumb bob off the grease fitting like the Chalmers manual suggests doing but still measured to the U bolt. Its very accurate but I trust your string method more for the back axels. There's no way to get a good measuring place at the back axels. The axel is square and sets rotated back several degrees. I measured the rear tandem and it showed 3/16 out of square but your string method says its strait ahead dead nuts. I'm going with the string. Chalmers says that all of the axles should be within 1/16 of perfect square.😃

What about centering the steering wheel? My KW T800 Dump has 1/16 toe in on the right front with the steering wheel strait. The left front tire has 1/6 toe out on the left front. The truck is pulling slightly to the right and worse while loaded I'm thinking that to fix this I need to pop the ball joint out and turn just the left side one full round. Last time we had it aligned the tech said that the left tire had 6 degrees of positive camber (top leaning in) and the right was close to strait up and down. It drove fine until we put new wider Bridgestone 315/80R 22.5 tires on it 3 weeks ago. Thanks so much for sharing this information! Love all the girls too!

My Cascadia has the same camber issue as your truck (top of left wheel leaning in.. right is barely leaning in. The left is not major leaning tho) With your steering wheel straight, your right wheel towed in 1/16 and left wheel towed out 1/6.. and u pull to the right.. U need your wheels adjusted to the right. Ive done many cars and even RC cars adjust the same way (crazy, but true. If it pulls to the right with the steering wheel straight, u adjust wheels to the right, but be sure you have them even in general before youre done.. whether u have a slight 1/16" tow in between the 2 wheels or not. And matching tires. If u still have a problem u go further with the comparison of rear wheel measurements like in this video.

Msg 2.. My issue that brought me here is steering wheel shimmy.. pretty bad starting from about 40mph. As i said my left front wheel is cambered in at the top.. the right is very slightly.. Then, standing about 15' back and looking at the steers i see I need an alignment (theyre towed out. truck has has a slight front end collision only cracking the Cascadia grill and making the bumper look like junk, but frame looks straight) Think ill start by getting my wheel bearings and kingpins checked, then do a front end alignment. Tires dont appear to have any cupping or flat spots but theyre mix match, which i really dont like. Truck doesnt really pull to any side but has that aweful shimmy and hood shaking. Its been a mid level fixer upper but is so close to hitting the road. My first truck, first owner op opportunity.

@@koollee I like RC Helis lol! Today measuring from the frame the right front tire is showing 1/4 toe in with steering wheel strait. The left is showing 1/4 toed out.
Do you recommend an alignment after changing the shock absorbers?
@koollee2 жыл бұрын
I would say it couldnt hurt, but not necessary. If u have a complaint or issue after changing shocks then u may need to get an alignment

Measure the depth on your tires check your tires if they are running through don't set no alignment

If I ever own my own truck, I think I'll get myself a nice big breaker bar and do my own alignments your way. I'm not crazy about how my employer sets tram on the fleet trucks. they go about half an inch wide on the passenger side to make the truck pull up the crown of the road. i'd rather just have plenty of caster and a truck that pulls straight. I steer with my left hand primarily so the weight of my left arm holds the truck up and away from the shoulder with a proper neutral alignment.

Nice explanation!!! But, based on my understanding one part missing. How you set steering tires drives straight? It could have no toe in but both tires drives little right or left? If you have 1/4 inch toe out which wheel you adjust left or right? (I didn’t read a book but I am pretty much sure there is a way to set steering wheels parralel to the frame when steering wheel is straight) Thank’s
