We went thru there last year on the dirt bikes. Some poor soul had his 4-Runner stuck right there at that 2:00 minute mark. He was hanging precariously. (he wasn't there when we first went around) he was winched and strapped down to not roll over. When we came back, they had returned w/ friends, vehicles and a wrecker to get him back. That had to be $$$
@bigjoeadvt723 күн бұрын
Ya, at least with a bike you can bail, I would have shat myself in a vehicle and in that situation, not only for the roll but the cost to get it out!

I'm too old and broke down to ride the Alpine Loop on a motorcycle. My last dirt bike was a 1978 Honda XL250 that I sold after riding it for 22 years. Still started on the first kick! Wife and I are heading for the Loop this Summer but in a lifted Power Wagon on 37's but definitely not going down Black Bear pass, we wouldn't want to dent the Martini shaker.

I imagine that had some miles/hours on it by it's end!! I keep thinking it would be easier in a 4x4 vehicle, but then i think, I really like seeing the ground all around me rather than guess!!

Lose 90% of your gear and get a KTM 350 or 500 (professionally lowered suspension…not dog bones) or a similar bike designed for what you are riding. You will have exponentially more fun riding these type roads in Colorado…just my $.02
@bigjoeadvt723 күн бұрын
I 100% agree with you. The goal this year is to get a plated dirt bike between the 300-450 range and use the T for it's sweet spot.

The easiest line on the steps is the outside edge for a motorcycle. The inside line is looks more comforting but is a lot harder.
@gjnorvell29 күн бұрын
Of course your bikes are way over loaded for the suspension and you can’t get your weight back when necessary to lighten the front wheel over obstacles. The twitchines of the front end was hard to watch.

@bigjoeadvt72 ай бұрын
Thanks! I would honestly say the spot we camped at was my favorite. There was openings in the trees to see the mountains. 300v is fun depending on the load and how icy it is, the Southern road is a lot easier and a truck can get to it np. The tunnel is on gold camp and is Tunnel #1. Enjoy your trip this summer!!

I did it on my T7 in August 2022 as a detour from the TAT; made it through the steps clean, then tipped over like a complete bozo on the switchback below the creek crossing. Not wanting to miss any of the TAT route, I went up Ophir pass and back down in the dark. I was one tired fellah after that day! Black Bear was honestly not as hard as I was expecting from reading KZfaq comments but it could easily go pretty badly with a bounce in the wrong direction, especially since I was riding it alone. Taking it slowly was the key.

So many benefits to riding a heavier bike like that. More planted, more power, gearing provides better performance on street, etc. Once that front wheel starts to slip though, they're just too heavy to prevent from going down. Glad you made it out safe man!

The county changes at the very top, which is where the sign has been posted that the pass into Telluride has been closed. Stop riding closed trails if you want us to be able to continue to ride these roads. Black Bear was essentially not open this year, and was not opened this year specifically because of stupidity such as this and people having to be evacuated off of the pass that never should have been there.
@brumph72565 ай бұрын
I’m sure weather is a huge factor in some of the closures but the weather seemed decent in this video….what was the closures for?
@MeerkatADV5 ай бұрын
@brumph7256 there was still a snow drift on the other side. Plus rock slides and other winter effects had made the road basically impassible. It didn't help several idiots drove up from the Telluride side and screwed the switchbacks up.
