30 years ago I gave up full bore target shooting and had my Omark rifle set up for hunting. I had the front sight removed and the step machined down to a ramp, had a 3-9 x scope mounted and a Harris bi-pod fitted. Even though it was only single shot it made a fantastic hunting rifle. I held a second round between the middle and 3rd fingers on my right hand and had a 5 round cuff wrapped around my left wrist. Fantastic on long range goats and pigs in far western NSW.

Jlock on my rifle when trading it in. OMG you have a jay lock you can never get the open once they close. Best it can do $250

A dealer will try every trick in the book to knock down the price on a trade in firearm. The J-Lock idea was a flop, but that's not a reason to devalue a Remington that has it. In saying that, J-Lock Rem 700's are less valuable due to the firing pin and spring design. They have been known to cause hangfires and were almost recalled because of it.

Hi mate. Im in the process of purchasing an omark 44.(second rifle) As im new to the sport to the point iv only fired 200 rounds and started handloading last week .308 marlin x7vh. Id like some tips on purchasing what questions to ask and what to avoid and what to look for. I really love the story of the omark 44. The fact it was almost the Australian army sniper issue and the choice of clubs nationwide really rings my bells. Cant wait to get one. And have something to shoot while the marlin cools down. Then #3 i think will be a remington 700 of some sort. Just got to keep hiding bank statements reciepts and scratching price tags of to keep the hobby alive.

+Nic Prosser G'day Nic, The Omark Mod 44 is a sensational, extremely accurate rifle for the person restricted to a smaller budget. A couple things to look out for are: The bolt head retaining pin. This pin was originally a smaller straight shank pin that has been known to break, which can allow the bolt to dangerously fly rearward and into the shooters face when fired. RARE but possible. 95% of these pins were replaced with a larger stepped pin. If you look at the pin and it has a larger diameter on one side of the bolt, it has been replaced and is good to go. Look for an action that has a MAB or Nielson adapter (located between the barrel and action). These are essential for the fitting of aftermarket (Krieger, Maddco, Bartlein etc etc) barrels. Without the adapter, you Must use TSE brand barrels that have the locking lugs built into them. TSE barrels are good, but far from the best. Omark Mod 44 actions do not come drilled and tapped for scope mounting options. Try to find one that has been professionally drilled and tapped and not done by some Joe Blow in the back shed. Make sure it comes with a rail to suit the screw spacing's. A lot of Omark 44's were fitted with aftermarket 'Davies' triggers by their owners. If you are lucky, you'll find a rifle with one fitted. They are the 'Jewl' equivalent match grade trigger that is fully adjustable and Very well made. A sign that one of these has been fitted, is the brass (gold) coloured trigger shoe. Older models came with a longer, narrower stock that had an upper timber piece similar to an SMLE. Most people remove the upper for a more 'modern' look. These rifles, although still Very good, don't have the 'flat' section that is machined into the bolt body. It just allows a slightly smoother bolt travel and avoids excess wear to the trigger sear. In saying that, a lot have had it done later on. As for buying a Remington 700, they are IMHO one of the biggest pieces of shit available. Extremely poor quality engineering. If you are after something that is accurate, the Rem 700 should be your last choice. Straight out of the box, a rifle such as the Savage Axis, even at less than half the price, will out shoot a Rem 700. 9 times out of 10. I have a fair bit of experience machining the Rem 700. Some with barrels 0.260" (6.6mm) out of alignment and bolt lugs that only contact on one side. Bolts that have 0.040" (1.01mm) runout within the action etc etc etc. Hope all this helps mate. Good Luck! Cheers, Ben.

Just got my an Omark 44 in .308 (krieger barrel), thing's a beauty: pushed it to 600yds within grouping under 1 MOA (I'm convinced it will do 0.5, still finding my comfort with the beastie). Will try 900yds next weekend, that should be fun!

I'm on my 8th Omark mod 44. The one in the Video was sadly stolen. I honestly can't think of a more accurate rifle for the money and I have spent tens of thousands on different rifles much to my wife's disgust. There are quite a few tricks to sweeten them up if you're interested. Sweetest thing about them, is they only go up in value! Enjoy your Aussie made tack drivers!!

Sounds like a good friendly club with the banter and shot calls, I'm seeking a SportCo at the moment, to go with a T4 Diopter and can only hope to get regular V Bulls at 600m +.

Thanks mate. The only bits of advice for shooting 1k I can think of are: 1. Shoot on days with no, or very minimal wind. 2. Use quality hand loaded rounds with high BC projectiles. 3. You will need a sloped scope rail, 20 or 30moa depending on the adjustment limits of your scope. Some very high quality scopes may not need a sloped rail. 4. Shoot off a sturdy rest or bi-pod. If you can do it standing, please send me a video ;-) 5. Some kind of ballistic calculator is a must if you don't want to fire 30 rounds to find the target. Cheers, Ben.

This one was still untouched. I have since drilled and tapped the action myself and machined up a pic rail for my scope. I have some experience doing this on very precise milling setups. Omark mod 44's are a fantastic rifle for the money.

good stuff mate those old full bore rifles are outrageously accurate if you get a good one. were you using one unmolested or was it drilled and tapped for scope mounts?
