Im coming at this from a survival/sustainability POV and have been looking for something like this. The shot isn't perfectly round but I reckon it'll kill game and soda bottles. Then adding a slug mould for deer and a buckshot mould for other game like coons and coyotes a fella could feed himself pretty well. Definitely gonna get one!

Lead typically melts well at 600-700 degrees Fahrenheit. Of course if your lead isn't completely pure; meaning it has other elements in it; you could be affected adversely. For instance, make sure you don't have any mystery metals; like Zinc within your melting material. Good Luck, Mariano.

Have you got a number of the cost to set up the process and how much you saved in $ to make your own shot??
@arizadam12
@arizadam12 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, no. I can’t say that I have. But I’m sure after $500+ spent vs $80-$90/25lb bag of shot; you can figure out just how soon you can break even with setup costs.

Where are you getting the bulk lead from??
@arizadam12
@arizadam12 Жыл бұрын
Hi Mind444. I get mine mostly from Tire replacement shops; some of them (not all) are willing to let folks take away the scrap, and for me that scores all the lead I can handle. Some shops won't allow it to go, for safety reasons. Just keep asking until you meet a guy that says YES.

Hello Mr Adam, my son is in trapshooting and I decided to make Shot to cut the cost. I have my system I’m trying to get it going but I’m having an issue. My pump is not circulating well and it’s creating a lot of foam. What is your best suggestion? I heard on your video you did a aquaponics pump. I am trying and searching on the Internet to look for the same pump. But no luck. When you can pease let me know. Thank you!
@arizadam12
@arizadam12 Жыл бұрын
HI William, congratulations on the decision to get a shot maker, and to help your son shoot more by reducing ammunition costs!! What you describe about foam in the coolant (fabric softener) was something I experienced also. I diluted my liquid by adding a small percentage of water; 10% by volume to start. So if your coolant tank consists of 5 Gallons of softener, try adding 1/2 gallon of water to dilute the mixture - You may have better results. As far as the aquaponics pump, this is just any ordinary aquarium pump; I believe the one I showed was a 15gallon/hour pump, pretty small but does the job. You should be able to find this at any local pet store that sells fish aquarium equipment -- or perhaps the easier route is to shop Amazon/Online for an aquarium pump of the same volume/hr. :) Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions.

I’ve been collecting used wheel weights from tire shops, and melting it down / cleaning it up with a fluxing process. Check my other videos. Or you can try reclaiming from a shooting range berm if you can get permission to dig/sift, or lastly buy it online from some folks selling it! 👍🏻👍🏻

If I may ask what is the angle of the heating element when the pan is locked in bought my own drip pan like this one but thought of buying my own heating range and using that and if so weld on spacers to get the correct angle could you please provide this info thank you.
@arizadam12
@arizadam12 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, I really can't advise you on the actual angles and such involved. You'll probably learn from trial an error what the angle should be, in conjuction with the angle of your lead ladel, and the lip created to allow the molten lead to drop and form beads. Good luck with your project.

LOL my friend, Thanks for the comment. My videos are gonna be a little bit of everything I enjoy. Gardening, prepping, reloading and lead reclamation, shot making -- yes sir lots of good stuff. It's been years since I made my last shot making video, due to a move from the home I was leasing, versus the home I bought and moved into; until now -- my new workshop has been all about woodworking and welding. Oh yeah some more hobbies I plan to catalog on video :) Thanks for writing, Dennis!

Two 25 pounds of lead shot (50#) runs $169 these days. If you get your lead free like I do dug out of the backstop at my local outdoor range the initial investment is recovered very quickly then it is saving you money from then on This is provided there aren't any beta manlets on the Board Of Directors that have a problem with doing it. I've been permanently banned at one indoor shooting range collecting lead. Come to find out they are running a illegal profit business out of a non profit club with over $92,000 in the checking account. They want every angle they can get to make money....I wonder if the IRS knows this? They kicked me out because I threw a monkey wrench in the sham and brought the issue to light. Who cares if someone takes someone elses as well as their own shot bullets. That lead belongs to the shooters, not the club. If people leave it, then obviously they don't care about it anymore and have relinquished ownership of it. They want to sell it to the scrapyard to maximize profits and covering more angles closing gaps and costs of operation. It's funny nobody cared about that lead and the traps were overflowing until someone took it to use it for a good cause. Better than wasting it selling it to the local scrapyard for pennies on the dollar to be ultimately sold to China and shipped out of the Country. They can get their own lead and firearm lead should STAY firearm lead as far as I am concerned. It's also about sticking it to "the man" Bidumb.....and all the scalpers ripping people off and constant "out of stock" issues. Reloading equipment if it is good quality and lasts a lifetime is not cheap and is money well spent. "Scam artists" are the scalpers and all the little boys and girls who get their feelings hurt when someone is smarter and more efficient than they are. It's not about "money".....it's about minimizing waste and reusing it.

@arizadam12
@arizadam12 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, I haven't yet tried to see how fast I can produce the shot, but the only thing holding me back would be how fast the element can melt the lead. I've seen guys pre-heat the lead and then run that through the ladle, but honestly the real restriction is how fast you can get the lead through the drippers. I'd guesstimate that 20 lbs per hours is probably doable. You know us reloaders have no concept of time well spent though lol

Hi Gene, I'm one of the lucky ones! I made contact with, and repeatedly return to pick up wheel weight trash from a tire shop in my area. They're a busier shop, with many dozen cars mounted a week, so every couple of months I show up and empty them of the tonnage. They can't throw it away, and letting me cart it off saves them Hazardous Waste reclamation fees. I think they love me, and I know I love them! Cost: FREE

I envy you, around my area berms are black dirt usually heavy moisture if not muddy. I have been lucky enough to find fairly clean lead at recycling center. Smelting a 26lb block now in fact. I tried to recover small amounts from berm but near impossible to sift. I use for .690 and .715 ball loads in 12ga, eat a lot of lead. Even tried rubber mulch in tote at range to keep my lead but too heavy to carry and blew right through anyway. And steel trap very much against safety rules. Good vidio, have fun.

Unless you're getting the lead for free. It's not worth it. Factor in the cost of materials, and hours you're putting into this.
