Seeing Jacob collier live was a religious experience for me. I then understood why his music doesn’t translate well to recorded, commercial tracks. It’s got a very improvisational feel that just needs to be witnessed in person. I think his music transcends the category of “product” and enters its own category of sensory and community experience, kind of like creative music therapy actually

On first glance sure. Dig deeper and read more about what he's doing in his music. He's more of a scientist and inventor than musician. See "just intonation", polithythmic music, etc if you are interested. The greats know what they're talking about
@ShootFirstNS2 ай бұрын
I always get far less interested in a person like this when I check their roots. His mother is apparently an extremely sought after musician and educator meaning he was raised to do this, yes his own unique ability is clear but a guy called Shroud, a professional gamer and streamer had a dad who basically raised him to be a professional gamer, go figure he becomes one of the best in the world. I'm not trying to discredit either of their ability or accomplishments but a kid who's got no parental influence who still manages to become something is far more interesting than a kid who's raised to be the thing they end up becoming... I notice this because I had less than no influence, I had negative influence, the idea of even being able to afford a cheap keyboard was out of the question. Makes me wonder what I have that he doesn't. I would've loved to be a musician
@WorldOfArtWorld2 ай бұрын
Exactly right. It's often the case with these kinds of people. From Mozart and Beethoven to modern day up and coming artists and Hollywood stars (not comparing them). When you have parental figure that molds your life from an early age, it's a completely different game altogether.

I wish I could love his music. I know how talented he is, how extraordinary these sounds he makes are. But I have sensory processing disorder and it’s physically painful to listen to any of his music precisely because it’s so complex. So, I try to be content with watching the effects of perhaps the only musical genius of my generation, instead of being able to experience it myself. It makes me so sad. I am, however, so glad so many people can listen to it without pain, though. Enjoy it all the more for me, you beautiful souls.

You don't understand his music. Look into micro-tonality, just tuning, poly-rhythmic music, etc. Listen to Moon River and if you still think he's done nothing, I've got nothing else to say to you.

@@WorldOfArtWorldbahahahaha. You obviously struggle with reading comprehension.I used to play kit and polyrhythm is one thing I could do very early on. Just because you cant comprehend someones point doesnt mean its not valid. I dont care about his pathological inability to maintain a tune or the key. His and your reasoning more jazz style blather to play wrong notes. Go back and read my original post until you understand it and stop trying to defend your own warped thinking. I DONT CARE for his interpretation of Moonr River. If he had composed Moon River I would have been impressed but he hasnt composed anything remotely close or even catchy. Is he a Bacharach or a Zimmerman ? No. As a composer - hes nothing. THAT WAS MY POINT. stop wasting my time

Just because something is complex and quirky, doesn't mean it's good. Sure he might be technically competent but his music sounds really bad to me. And I don't mean "it's not my cup of tea" bad. Having so much in your technical arsenal doesn't necessarily make good music. That's what I think about Jacob. His passion and talent is obviously rare. However his music just concentrates on showing off impossible sounds rather than focusing aesthetic and evoking emotion.
@rossxoworld2 ай бұрын
you phrase that as though it’s a fact rather than an opinion, “good music” will always means something different depending on who you ask, but there’s such a trend of admiration among the established generations of musicians that’s ignorant to say he’s “just showboating” without substance. You may just be coming from a different perspective is all :)

I find it amusing to browse the comments. Never before I've seen people so divisive over an artist before. I understand why people are saying they can't enjoy Jacob's music. The guy found a wrong pitch in modern piano, plays 5 string guitar and play 5 beat percussion over 4 beat song. This guy is not normal. But it never meant his songs are not beatifull. Some guys like to go to the beach, some goes to the mountains, some go to hunt. There is no right or wrong if you like the songs or not. It just seems to me if you are the type of person who has a favourite genre, you will find it hard to like his music. There's a reason why his concerts are filled with musicians, he's pushing boundaries like none before.

I really don’t feel him as a “genius”, nothing he has done has touched me to the slightest, and I’m deeply touched by Angie, by Wish You Were Here, by Love Of My Life, by Fast Car, by Rob Dougan’s “There’s Only Me” or his Futious Angels, by Nothing Compares…… I find him very cerebral, self absorbed and with this ridiculous carefully groomed artificial accent and “royal” yawning voice. I like his apparent kindness and openness, I don’t find him unpleasant or disgusting like other narcissists usually are. I like his love for multitrack recording and layering. I feel dull, dead nothing from his ancestors being conductors of “prestige”, him conducting multitudes of sheepishly smiling masses producing harmonies.
@WorldOfArtWorld3 ай бұрын
It's not about whether or not you're feeling him. It's about what he's doing with modern music that other people/artists aren't. Has been discussed in length in the comment section. Also on youtube. Music is not just about "feeling it" the same way great architecture or literature are not just about "feeling it" or not. Sadly, music has only been deducted to how it makes us feel this days.
