Another wonderful children's book that I've recently read and enjoyed so much is The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. It's a book about friendship and the love of home. I read it with Miranda and The Comfort Book Club. Like you, there are many children's books that I never got around to reading as a child, so I'm playing catch-up now. It's never too late. ❤ It's a perfect summer day here in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It's sunny with blue skies and a temp of 75°. Happy reading!

Today was glorious in Ontario as a 10 day heatwave broke and it only got to 27 C or something like that instead of 39 C which with 83% humitidy or higher is brutal. I am going to introduce you to some Australian literature that popped into my mind instantly when you talked about childrens literature - The Magic Pudding by Norman Lindsay. Im sure you will love it.

I love the Anne of Green Gables books! They were my favorites as a young girl. I’ll definitely have to revisit them again. On another reading note, if you’re a big fan of books and reading like myself, then you’ll definitely like using Immersive Translate. It’s basically a free browser extension that supports a wide variety of languages. You can use it to translate all your ebooks into any language. Are you into manga? There’s also a cool feature, where you can get accurate translations to the manga you’re currently reading, which is a total plus.

Hey Claire! We just had Hurricane Beryl hit us here in Texas. We dealt with a lot of rain and wind, and now we’re just left with the summer heat. Currently, I’m reading War and Peace. It definitely seems kind of daunting, but I’m just taking it one page at a time.

Thank you. Yes I can imagine you are pretty wired up, my granddaughter speaks as quickly as you do. I can only offer one recommendation is to open you mouth more when you speak. . That might help. You are , and forgive me for saying this but you very pretty and look lovely. Thank you for telling me about yourself. I hope I didn’t offend you … I was only hoping to understand you more. I loved that you love literature and was wanting to hear what you had to say. Yes nature walks and reading make you peaceful don’t they. I will not stop watching you but perhaps I will watch you twice each time as I think you are worth it. I love literature and as I write and my background is teaching. It might interest you to know I live in Australia and I did live in England for a few years though I did not get to Yorkshire. I have been watching Miranda Mills recently who talks about books and she also lives in Yorkshire. So I am seeing it anew. Well thank you for replying to me that was nice of you and I hope I can gain a lot from your lovely videos.

I feel that I went from Winnie the Pooh and memorizing Christopher Robin poems to Sherlock Holmes. There was some Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and some Little House on the Prairie (hello ‘70’s) but I am seriously dug into Victorian literature and mysteries. Read a lot of classics out loud to my children Wind and the Willows is a highlight) but like you I gathered them as an adult. Now I like to give the Little Prince to my great nephews when they are about nine. Love your new shelves. 📚

Also, if you are an avid reader you must learn how to read literature during the period in which it is set without becoming offended. It is important to have these records historically. You can read objectively and have the conversation without becoming uncomfortable.
@Claire_Fenby
@Claire_Fenby 10 күн бұрын
You can do both! If you stop having a reaction to it, it threatens to normalise it (making it “just a word”) in my opinion. If I feel comfortable around racial slurs, I’ve lost my mind and my empathy! As I mentioned, it’s important to acknowledge the context of colonialism but It’s also important to note that many people, contemporary to Burnett, campaigned strongly against the British empire in India so her prejudices still need to be challenged. If being offended by racism means I can’t be an avid reader then so be it 🤣
@heatherboo1
@heatherboo1 10 күн бұрын
@@Claire_Fenby racism in everyday context is offensive! I’m not saying it wouldn’t offend me. BUT I think it’s important to have the ability to have open discussions about it in literature without any knee jerk reaction of shutting down, which many people have. I think having the conversation (as we are) actually prevents it from being normalized. 🙂
@Claire_Fenby

@heatherboo1 I think when you say that someone needs to learn to not be offended by racism in books, it’s very close to sounding like you’re complaining about “wokeness” hence my reply. I hope you feel like my video nods to both sides - enjoying and recommending the book but also condemning the racist language.

We've had the first true burning hot days of summer in Barcelona so it's been draining, but I can always count on your videos to pick me back up!! I love your reflections on reading children's literature as a child VS as an adult, and saw a lot of myself in it too!! As a teenager I refused to indulge in YA, and although it's not my main go-to now, I enjoy spicing my reading up every now and then with the occasional YA title. Also I've been in a Patricia Highsmith kick lately because of Ripley (2024), do you enjoy any other mystery authors outside Agatha Christie? ✨ Best regards Claire, thanks for another delightful video! 📚

The weather has been very british here in continental Europe as well! Lots of rain, which I love, but people are starting to get really depressed 🙃 I remember reading "I capture the castle" a few years ago, as an adult, and absolutely loving it. It's not as big in French as it is in English I think - actually I should do a little research on the French(-speaking) children's classics! I can't for the life of me remember what I was reading as a kid, aside from comics. Lovely video as always, Claire 🧡📚
