Love the finger picking and the sixties feel (though it is 1970). Thank you for sharing this long lost gem!

Does this mean there are 21 demo recordings by McLean on the tape. Amazing. Great listening to this and the early version of Vincent. Any more please?

I have a copy of this song on a CD collection that I acquired a few years ago, entitled "Early Unreleased Recordings 1972 -74." Some of the tracks are taken from earlier studio tapes, including this treasure! The individual who sent the CD to me knows who they are and if they read this comment, I want to extend a deeply-felt "THANK YOU" for adding such a rare, unique gem to my Melanie collection!

Fred Neil has got to be in the pantheon of GREAT American singer-songwriters/troubadours...A huge influence on countless of so many singer songwriters. And his 12-string guitar work was so cool...influenced Crosby, McGuinn....etc.

Thanks so much! A new recording I have not heard. I wish he hadn't been such a recluse. I would have loved to hear him live. But by the time I was born he had already gone back to Florida to hide out and love on dolphins. I can't blame him. But I wonder if kept playing and recoding from home. I hope so. Where is the little kid pictured with him on his self titled album?

His version is interesting he keeps the root all in the same key the whole time which redefines the song

I was around when this song first came out. I told my Dad that I liked it and the next day by my lunch money was a note that read "Elusive Butterfly" and an arrow pointing to a 45 rpm vinyl disc. Of course it was not the long version, that had to wait until someone uploaded it to youtube decades later. Thank you for posting this long version. It is icing on the cake my Dad served me long ago.

I had no idea this song had all these verses!! This song popped into my head just a few minutes ago when I saw a butterfly flitting through my backyard! So I thought I want to listen to this song and here I am!! I am amazed to have stumbled across this acoustical extended original version of this lovely song! I loved when it first came out and now I love it even more! Thank you ❤🎶🦋🦋🦋

It’s nice to hear the full song, but to me it’s only a curiosity. I myself was hoping for the full completed version were used to hearing with a couple added verses. Much like discovering the original version of Hang on Sloopy by the McCoys with an extra verse. Also Surfer Joe by The Sufaris with an extra verse. This to me is interesting, but a bit of a letdown more of a demo than a finished product. I liked hearing the completed song, but the edited version is truly the classic for me.

@BazookaTooth707 2 ай бұрын
I find the full version to be more compelling and poetic. I see both songs as two totally different versions. This version is raw and has a darker more somber vibe. The edited studio version is more upbeat and a product of it's era

To Tarbaby. Best to hear from her children if she continue with them until her passing. I wouldn’t be surprise if after meeting Amma and writing the song “Motherhood of Love” if she withdrew from her interest to Scientology

Am amazed this recording has emerged from obscurity. A rare find indeed. Few early recordings like this can exist. "Needle of Death" was the first song my guitar teacher wanted me to learn, but it was way too difficult for me as a beginner.
