Mountain bikers on Bredon Hill are a danger and those of us who live here have had enough. Pets have been killed, horse spooked, and cyclists who over-estimate their abiliy have been injured. It's not all about you.

Looks a well organised event. What kind of tyres did you use or would you recommend as I've heard there is a lot of on road sections? I'm doing it this year.
@russlazenby
@russlazenby 10 жыл бұрын
There is quite a bit of on road - as with all C2C routes - I used the tyres that came on the bike - Specialised Purgatory and Ground controls I think - as it was (unusually) bone dry last year. These all-rounders probably provided more grip than was needed given the conditions, but we weren't trying to break any records! We noticed a few sections on days 2 and particularly 3 that could have been quite heavy going if wet.

Nice video. Did you find that you needed the sat nav or was the route well sign posted? Thanks

Cheers Andy. Signing was very good we found. We didn't use satnav.

Many thanks, much appreciated. We're all on 26 inch standard full sus so we'll be ok I'm sure.

Training - I think the notes are there to frighten off people who aren't at all fit. I didn't do any specific training but am able to get out for 3 to 4 longish rides a week. Paul does a lot less but is naturally quite fit (and is pretty skinny). We're both over 50 and it took us about 9 hours a day (towards the back of the field), the quick boys were doing it in 5 hours a day. Conditions were unusual in that it was very hot - which caused a fair few people problems, but overall this was countered by the fact that the tracks were all bone dry and fast. I rode a 29 inch full suss with 110mm travel, whereas Paul had a 29 inch XC hardtail. For pure speed a hardtail would get you there quicker, but there were lots of full sussers around which made some of the nobbly stuff more fun - though some of the real technical stuff in the Lakes was too much for anything! (Big push and carry on day one which you may have noticed on the video). Tyre width... you can run 29ers narrower and still have bigger footprint than 26ers. There aren't that many techie downhill bits so wide tyres not essential. A lot of road work. Unless you have really hefty DH bikes a full susser would be fine unless you are really keen to get as fast a time as possible - we weren't that fussed - hence pub / café stops on all three days! Depending on your ages and any "weight issues" - I think you'd need to up your mileages to a few 20/30 mile hilly rides prior to the event - supplemented with a couple of other bits of cardio vascular stuff every week. Paul did less than this as he was injured a few weeks before we were due to go, but he did suffer big time on day one when it was really hot and we ran low on water. Despite the heat we reckon that under (normal) wetter conditions, it would have taken us even longer. Hope this helps - and good luck!

I am lucky to be able to ride a lot both on and off road so didn't really do any specific training for this event. Paul on the other hand only does one fairly long off-road ride once a week (typically 20 to 30 miles) and not much else, but I think he's one of those naturally fit kind of people. We're both over 50 and it took us around 9 hours a day - so were amongst the slower riders. The fastest people were completing the ride in about 5 hours a day! Some of the really slow people were taking up to 12 hours a day. It was REALLY hot and I think some of those who really struggled were dehydrated. If it had been wet I think the ride would have been much tougher than it was - all the off-road stuff was unusually dry and fast. I think the training notes are there to make sure people do something beforehand and don't just rely on grit and determination. Probably good idea to get some long rides in before the event. Good luck!

Hi Russell, ace videos! Me and 2 friends are about to sign up to do the RRC this year but wanted to find someone who'd completed it to ask some questions if you dont mind? Do you need to put in all the hours training they recommend??? I understand training is essential but the websites recommendations seem very excessive. Also, we all ride full suspensions, would you recommend hardtail as the way to go? Tyres, you look to have 2.2 or less, we all have 2.35s, again would you recommend new tyres? Finally (sorry about this), just overall, what tips would you have for 3 every 'other weekend riders' who do no more than 10 miles at a time? Much appreciated in advance Russell...... Regards, Dan Eyre ([email protected]):)

i am riding this for my first time too! cant wait, then next year i do the joberg2C epic!. I would try to put in more training than 10miles. U really got to try to get in a few 5 hours rides, distance not important, time on saddle is. Ride the rat race , slow and steady , eat lots , drink lots, sleep lots. we will all be ok. i have both hard and full bike, i will for sure bring my full suspension,.

Hi there, excellent videos of the crossing. A few mtb friends and I are thinking of doing it this year. Did you have to train as Much as is suggested on the rat race website? That's the part that's putting me off!

We used our own bikes - but they could be hired for the trip. Trek Mambas were the hardtails you could hire, pretty good bike for the trip.
