At 5:11 to fill the lubricator, it is best to squirt the stm oil from the top after opening the bttm drain hole. Keep on pumping the oil until oil shows up at the drain hole. Now, the lubricator cyl is free of water n air bubble. U can then suck out or stop pumping just maybe 1/8" above the bottom of the plug screw to allow steam input room in the lubricator. Yes, i understand u just ran this engine partially just B4 this video session. But still, it is better to nut (not) just drip it out and guess if the water is all out. This replenishing of the stm oil is nec. as u want to continue running the loco for more than the maker's designated run time. So goes w the water n fuel. But unless u have say, Goodall valve, or a clack valve, u can't replenish water under boiler pressure. U need to wait till the boiler cools down to 0 psi. Further more, if u c the lubricator's oil not being used or little used for the said duration run, then watch out!!!

The banjo might be better sealing on a fibre washer. O rings are great for those “hand tight” regularly opened items like filler plugs etc, but a banjo needs a good firm seal. Great first run.
@AceEngineeringWorks

I agree however the seat of the bolt is not flat to suit a fibre washer, it is shaped especially for an o ring, as is the boiler.

what rustic beautiful scenes along the rails. And i like these 16mm (1/.19th scale) models running on Ga. 0 narrow ga. tracks vs. on Ga. 1 wider tracks. The former much narrower track makes the loco's front too wide, almost would topple it down to the sides as how the prototype narrow ga. locos would look from the front. Only one request is to make at least one spur track imperfect, undulating in both X, Y, n Z coordinates so the loco would teeter totter. The right and left rails must go up and down out of phase like two sinusoidal sine wave. That would b like a true 2ft na. ga prototype operation!!! Is that possible in 1/19th modeling? I assume the wheels must be at least all sprung (vs. drilled frames w axles inserted) if not equalized w levers n springs.
@AceEngineeringWorks
@AceEngineeringWorks 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest that it would be possible to recreate that imperfection, but frustrations would run high as different rolling stock and engines could potentially favour to launch off of the rails in this area. But t the scene would be lovely when it worked and filmed. 👍

I have just finished repairing and restoring an S E 3 and agree that a tiny tweek of the timing makes quite a big difference. It will now run smoothly at very high speed (not something to do for too long!) and also "ticks over" very slowly. A good tip!

That is a beautifully running locomotive and an excellent video. I just ran my first steam locomotive today after many attempts. It is a vintage Mamod SL1K locomotive that I built myself to work on 1 Gauge track and their lies the first problem I encountered. My kit did not have enough gaskets so I went to the hardware store and bought a sheet of cutable rubber gasket which was much too soft to cut properly. This prevented the steam from entering the cylinder and caused a massive pressure leak from the sight glass plate. I then acquired some additional original gaskets and installed them. After resetting the O ring beneath the sight glass I tried it again and to my dismay the side rods started to bind and after some research I learned that the wheels had become loose from their axles. So I pulled off the wheels and re-quartered them then fused them back onto the axles using Loctite 603. After letting them cure for a day I attempted to fire it up but it would not build up enough steam to run. It was then I noticed that the whistle lever was being held open by a screw which holds the back cab bracket into place. After removing this screw I fired it up again and lubricated everything. It was then that it took off and ran like hell. Still currently breaking it in but it's so satisfying to see it run and it's getting better each time. I love it.

Admire u stuck w it till u got all the bugs out. Yes, the earlier LadyAnne like this videoer's and all other RndHse engines didn't have water gauge like even the cheaper MadMom and dat was dis-srvc!!! It'll b great if their products hav Goodall valve so u can continue to run. I don't know if their new Ag Lady has it. But finally, due to Accucraft competition, their product is improving e.g., sprung axles. Hopefully, they'll upgrade their rods n valve gears to 3D contoured ones, even w flutings vs. flat bent cut rods.

Have you ever experimented with hedge hogging on the boiler? It seems that the major fault with mamod locomotives is a boiler that doesn't produce any steam, it seems like the extra heating surface area would greatly improve performance .
@AceEngineeringWorks
@AceEngineeringWorks 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I’ve never needed to do this. The alcohol burners can produce too much steam, gas can be adjusted easily and tablets seem ample. From my experience, if an engine appears to not be steaming enough, there’s usually enough steam and a fault in the mechanicals somewhere. Mamod/MSS locos don’t generally need better performance.
@johnkuzma7066
@johnkuzma7066 3 жыл бұрын
@@AceEngineeringWorksThanks for the reply, actually, I have experienced excellent performance at low altitude, but since I live at 6000feet, there doesn't seem to be enough oxygen for the fire to burn properly. Resulting in a sluggish locomotive. I chipped off the old esbit residue (it is now alcohol fired) yesterday, hoping that makes an improvement.
