It's quite sad the level of views this has. Almost as if most people only care about the monetary value of art rather than the discourse. At Gallery 44, we place the discourse at front and center and I think this needs to be the case moving forward.

It looks as gloomy as ever with this apology of misery and mediocrity. Too bad I thought the themes would change over the years.

I am struck by how there is no reflection on ideas about exposing 'previously' disadvantaged children to a garden for the first time, and re-educating Africans about their 'fauna and flora', how paternalistic. The political is really in our understanding about outreach, charity and social responsibility, especially in Cape Town, and in South Africa in general.

hmm...I think there was a huge point or topic that was not considered. In this question... "What Matters More: Artists or Artworks?" Jitish Kallat point is simply talking about the order of operations, subject or object. The question is actually about what "matters" more. This is mentioned in minute 55 as I am writing this lol. What is the definition of "matter." What is the psychology of what gets to matter and what doesn't. Also, who or what group of peoples determines what matters in a society? How does the art impact an individual or society and therefore determines if the artwork "matters" more or not? The degree to which an artist or their work "matter" or not, I would say, is determined by how or what society gains by it. If an artist produces work that society does not benefit from or sees no value in, the artist matters more. If the artist produces work that substantially impacts society and will outlive them, the art matters more. The greatness of a work is also not tied the greatness of an individual. Great people also produce subpar work, just like a subpar artist can get lucky once or twice and become, or be known as, "great."

Interesting, why is it so dark? Is this the dark night of the soul? I'm just curious, closed spaces, dry animals, no one feels uncomfortable? I'm confused, what does this represent in expression? What is speaking?
