Currently reading this and i think the book is unnecessarily long. Each chapter could have been shorter and still tell exactly the same story.

I love Ella Enchanted so much, but I wanted to share a perspective I heard about the original Cinderella story that made me re-evaluate how I perceived Cinderella. When I was complaining about the poor messaging behind Cinderella's passivity and her external salvation, a LOT of people mentioned how much the Cinderella story meant to them when they were in situations of domestic abuse. They talked about passivity being a necessary survival skill when there's a legitimate danger to one's well-being and survival. They talked about how hurtful it was to be deemed passive when they were giving their all to get through on the day-to-day. I think the Disney Cinderella story is an entirely different story from the Ella Enchanted story, and not primarily because of how Cinderella and Ella act. Ella always has the support of Mandy, she has access to make friends with Areida and Prince Char, and she is constantly able to retaliate when she's treated unjustly. Ella has traveled and is familiar with the world outside of her step family when they try to isolate her. Cinderella is completely isolated and unsupported except by animals. I prefer the Ella Enchanted story because I like the story of someone being able to take agency and control their situation, but the reality is that our control over our fates is tenuous and reliant on luck-- and significantly more so for any group that is at all disempowered or disadvantaged. I think it's important to recognize the ways that Cinderella isn't passive. She has wants (the ball as a reprieve from her life) and she works hard to achieve them. When she's locked in her room and screaming for help, she's not being passive. I enjoyed your video, just wanted to share what had shifted my perspective on the original story!

I submit the following as your new mantra for this video (4 years too late): Don’t sleep, but leap! Leap on it, don’t sleep on it! Leaping, not sleeping! Leap on books, don’t sleep like kooks!

It's not a UK version of the audio book. Daniel Handler narrarated books 3-5 and said it was too difficult so they rehired Tim Curry.

I'm so happy you covered this entire book! I didn't get past page 110 because I just felt the story dragging even though it was only starting to pick up in plot. Now I kind of regret not sticking through it. Who doesn't enjoy a good cry after a book? Love your commentary!

I’m SO happy that I saw this video before reading it. Many people said that it was a deep book with deep issues in it, but since I’m someone who’s recovering pretty well from a really bad mental health, I was tempted to read it. My only triggers are SA and self harm, so I thought I’d give this book a try, but thank God I didn’t. Only by watching this I felt really sickened and depressed, so thank you very much for posting this, you’re a life saver!

Got the book as a Christmas present. Now it's resting in the paper container in front of my flat. It's way too depressing to read it all. So if you really want to kill yourself, keep reading. I won't.
