Great video! I am a photographer, currently trying to move away from working off of my external hard drive and working off of a cloud, but backing up to external hard drives (in addition to backing up to Backblaze). I do not want to work off of my computer hard drive as it slows it down eventually and ages it quickly. Do you work off of your hard drive and manually move files to Dropbox? Or do you keep them in that Desktop application folder on your computer and just make sure everything is always offline/on the cloud unless you need to work on it? So for instance if you first cull images into Lightroom, do you have a folder on your hard drive for those files that you copy to your Dropbox folder or do you keep everything in Dropbox that you make sure is either local or offline? I just do not want to have to do all of this stuff manually in the chance I miss some files. Is there a setting to copy all of your computer hard drive files to Dropbox automatically that you use? I know they allowed backup like that on the higher plans I tried out. I had some major issues with Dropbox this year from the smart sync feature where it really slowed down another computer I was using because of the file duplication. It seemed to glitch and then duplicate folders inside other folders. It was a mess and really set me off Dropbox. It is a long story but essentially I know I cannot work directly off of Dropbox because you need to toggle the local/online only and I do not like that it duplicates files onto my hard drive and doesn't seem trustworthy. Have you ever worked directly off of a cloud? Google Drive for instance? Or anything else? Such a long comment, lol thank you for reading!

Great questions! I work off of external drives and when I’ve completed the editing of an event, I copy the final images into my Dropbox. Same with final wedding album designs, products sold (like canvas prints, holiday cards, etc). I do use Dropbox for all business stuff like invoices and tax related things. And those don’t need to be on my computer or hard drive. Same with blog images.

Hi Gordon, thank you so much for reaching out. Once I returned from this trip to Mexico, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and it threw me off of my content creation schedule. After things settled down (she's fine now), I started wrapping up my 20 years of my photography business. I have a lot of videos that I recorded but have yet to edit. However, I'm feeling done with the photography business now. If anyone sees this and is interested, I do have several fully un-edited client meetings that I recorded that I could upload in their entirety. Two are album design sales sessions, which are long but would be helpful to see how I run those.

Hi there, I just found your channel in researching the CPP CIrriculum offered by PPA. I’m an amateur photographer for over 40 years. I retired last summer from 26 year public service career and have made the decision to invest (and believe) in myself as a landscape and nature photographer/creator. I would like to also write books for children to get them excited about protecting and nurturing nature and wildlife. I am very free spirited and don’t use tripod or flash, but my goal is to be completely comfortable with all phases of photography since I did purchase a decent tripod flash and pro grade high-res camera (not mirrorless). Thanks very much, I look forward to viewing your content and listening to your wisdom. Ps - I had this experience (ie the bad print) with a local supposedly pro print photo shop. I am glad I decided not to go local and really am impressed with Printique’s results with my images.

What is the highest quality type of album and cost?
@HeatherMcKay
@HeatherMcKay Жыл бұрын
High-quality albums will generally run $1000 for a 12" book with 20-30 spreads. I'd budget costs from the lab anywhere from 500-1000 and then triple that for what you charge the client, in order to cover your time, taxes, overhead, etc.

I never sell print and barely print anything. I want that to change. But how in the world do I get them to buy print when so many people already think I'm high, NOT! Is there a scale to go by on sizes and what to charge?
@HeatherMcKay
@HeatherMcKay 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, PPA has a great "Benchmark Survey" which helps to set prices. Generally speaking, 8x10 and smaller should be around $75 each. When we raise our prices, those people who think you are too high will go away and you'll book quality leads who actually want to pay. There are lots of layers, so feel free to watch a bunch of my other videos on how I do this.

I just found your video 5 minutes ago, I like what you’re saying here. I’m an older guy retired from my career and doing professional photography part time. I shoot corporate events, weddings, family sessions, portraits, real estate, organized league youth sports. I’ve always given out the jpeg files and I’m wanting to quit doing that. My shooting fees are too low and I rarely sell print orders because people are cheap and would rather go to a store for prints. I warm them of the poor quality they’ll receive from store prints but most do it regardless. I need to learn how to set up my website so clients can view the images, pick what they want and I make the order, which of course gives me that profit. All I’ve gotten thus far is money from the shoot fee, ….. print sales have been slim. Help😧
@HeatherMcKay

The quick answer is that your pricing is part of your marketing. If you're too low, you'll attract low-spending buyers. When you raise your prices, those people naturally stop booking you, and the ones that DO book are high caliber.

@HeatherMcKay
@HeatherMcKay 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think anything is a waste of time if it helps you grow. That being said, PPA is a national and long-standing organization (watch my video about why I'm a PPA member) and the certification is a legit 3rd-party verified certification. Many 'schools' are just successful photographers who have started teaching. So, whatever it is, just make sure you find it has what you are looking for. I definitely did not need a BFA in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology even though that's the top photo school in the US. Money could have been spent by interning as a photographer assistant for a few years instead.

Hey Heather, I really enjoyed your video expounding on this! I’m jumping into photography and am basically half way through my second year. On one hand I'm towards the end of starting up my own business and putting the front end work on the business side of things (obtaining an EIN # and website and all that jazz) but I’m also in the hiring process with a wedding photography company that is wanting to put all the potential candidates through the cpp exam to make sure everyone knows their stuff (I definitely dont know my stuff...) and I’m pretty pumped about taking the class! Hearing a little of your experience made me much more excited about the process to get to the exam since it seems like the process I’m going through will be similar to yours with your group of 6. I plan on studying my butt off but was also wondering with your experience and rubbing shoulders with other photographers new and seasoned, if there were any particular subjects or topics that you saw that consistently tripped up the newer photographers taking the exam?
@HeatherMcKay
@HeatherMcKay 2 жыл бұрын
WOW, I have to say that I'm super impressed/excited to hear that a wedding photography company is making you go through the process. Typically with companies, they don't really care much for the client's experience, etc. Yes, it sounds similar and I can't wait to hear how it goes for you all. The topics that we seemed to need to practice a lot were balancing outdoor ambient light and using fill flash (VITAL for weddings), reading the histogram, and always color theory. With photogs editing their own work most of the time, color theory is vital and most people have no idea how bad they are at editing their own work (which is why everyone just throws a Lightroom filter on everything! LAZY!).
@HeatherMcKay
@HeatherMcKay 2 жыл бұрын
...not to mention, if you get good at seeing color... you can get it RIGHT inside the camera, which greatly reduces the need for much editing. This is the key to a profitable business and less time sitting behind the computer all summer long.
