Thanks for sharing this. It's really cool to learn how to make bolts to spec. I notice the geometry of the head has some distortion, but I managed to clean some of it up using Bool Tools and just slice the top off, extrude it a little bit and then bevel it. I can't wait to get home to try and print one and see how it goes.

How do i use it to operate on real size of bolt? For example i can not use pitch value lower than 10 cm.
@3dplockisАй бұрын
By default, it is 1000 times bigger. Build your bolt like that, 1000x bigger. When it's done, just scale it down 1000 times. Then apply the scale.
@WayneRiesterer17 күн бұрын
You can also set your units to millimeters, unit scale to 0.001 and grid scale to 0.001. When you design your parts, they will then show the correct dimensions. Also, when you're entering the values into numeric inputs, it will round the values off for display purposes, but it still keeps greater precision for the actual value stored with the model.

@@3dplockis I have hacked my way around this. The problem is that if you roll an object (such as a rubiks cube) the colors do not rotate the full 360,, I.E green will be on top, then it rolls 90 and then green jumps to the top again for the next 90 rotation. I have hacked it by keyframing rotating the geometry 90 after the set position node.

You don't have to change the units in preferences to go from metres to centimetres to millimetres etc... Just type the unit type straight after the number... m, cm, mm, inch or ", foot or '... It's much quicker that way.
@3dplockis4 ай бұрын
Interesting, I didn't know that. But I can't get it to work. Are you saying that in edit mode I can simply press E for extrude, then for example Y, and then for example 12 mm, and it should be in millimeters? Because I can't get it to work. Is there any add-on I need to activate?
@tinpot19784 ай бұрын
@@3dplockis that's interesting because yes that's exactly what I'm saying and it works for me just fine. Not sure exactly what add-on it could be. I'm away for the weekend and will have a look Monday.
@tinpot19784 ай бұрын
@@3dplockis I've looked it up and apparently there are two modes for input. A simple mode which is what you're on... And an advanced mode which I'm talking about... Yours just accepts numbers and very basic stuff but advanced accepts different units and expressions. Google "numeric input blender manual" for the documentation. I think you press "=" and "ctrl+=" to toggle between simple and advanced input. Let me know how you get on with that.
@3dplockis4 ай бұрын
Look at that! NumpadAsterisk (easiest on a Swedish keyboard) activated the function, but it seems like I need to press it before entering each new measurement, and input the unit type every time? Is that how it works or am I missing something?
@tinpot19784 ай бұрын
@@3dplockis Does the '=' not make it stay on all the time? No I don't have to activate it every time. In fact I've not had to turn it on since my blender journey began years ago so it must have been turned on right at the start and got saved with the preferences ages ago.

i don't delete other edges to make the length i want ,I just drag back the edge to coincide with first edge and move the required length(of course turning edge snap on,actually i always turn vertex,edge,face,midpoint and perpendicular on)/ I dont understand why everyone is telling to delete first ,just turn off automerge and drag back.

Not as easy as I hoped but I found an solution with geonodes, will try to get out an tutorial this weekend
@millerbyte5 ай бұрын
@@3dplockis You rock -- I didn't even think about geonodes for this. I got this working by making a copy of the coil curve, compressing it all the way, and then converting to a mesh. I then copied this compressed mesh to another coil (this coil is already a mesh in the "extended" state) as a shape key that I can animate. Not perfect, but it worked!
@3dplockis5 ай бұрын
Might accidentally find a quick fix depending on your goals (working in Blender 4). If you start out with a curve with geometry, like my coil, and then just add an image texture to your BSDF, press Ctrl+T (Node Wrangler) to get mapping and texture coordinates, and then choose UV. Now, the image might 'roll' when animated; if so, change the twist method in the object data properties to Z-up. Now it might look okay. But to get a better understanding of the UV map, make a copy of the curve, convert it to mesh, then open it up in UV editing. Press A, and you will see that Blender has already fixed a nice UV map for you. With this information and understanding of the created map, you can adjust your image to your liking, and then it will work on the curve. It might be a rough solution, but for me, who works a lot with images, it's by far the easiest I've seen. Does this work or do you rather see the geo nodes suggestion?
