Erich MUHSAM."

Jamal was the first jazz musician I ever saw. It was at the large tent called the Meadowbrook Auction House in Essex County, NJ. It was 1960 and my girlfriend and took the bus on the ten-mile trip to a distant suburb of Newark for the 7pm concert. Jamal had become popular with his the release of the album "But Not for Me" which featured the smash hit single "Poinciana ". And here he is still pulling me in some 62 years later! I am so glad I've lived long enough to see him evolve from his preferred ensemble of three to work with larger configurations just as effectively. Whenever he is within 30 miles of me, I go to see him. So far, it's been twice at Blues Alley, twice at the University of Maryland and once at Ethel's Place in Baltimore. Before I become an ancestor, I hope I may see him "just one more time" to borrow the title of a song from the 50's. David Hugo Barrett, Author "A Newark Childhood

I love his music, and I've been listening to it since 1979, but I really fell in love with him and his music after hearing an interview with Russ Davis in 1982 here in Atlanta, although they spoke by telephone. His enthusiasm for music and his remarkable love of the creative process just drew me in. I really felt like I was right at home with it, and he always delivers a flawless performance every time I get to attend his concerts. My favorite memory with him was in 1983 when he came to Cafe 290 here in Sandy Springs, ga, a suburb of Atlanta. It was during his "The First Circle" tour, and while he was performing it, I had to put my music theory lessons to practice. I was nervous, because I wanted to get the rhythm correct. Being totally blind, I wanted my twin sister, Maggie, who was with me, to write it down on a napkin and I tried my best to sign it. I guessed it was in 18, 8 time. After he completed the set, he called out to me. He read it back and asked me how confident I was. I said that I might be a little off, but I'd just finished two years of music theory and just had to give it a go. Others had also had a go of it, but when he said that I'd come the closest, my heart skipped a beat. Then, he said "Give yourself a pat on the back for a great try!" It is 22, 8 time. He really was impressed! Needless to say, I was on cloud nine for several days after that. This is coming from someone who's loved music all my life, and I'm a singer. It was a real struggle for me, because my family wouldn't allow me to even start a musical career, because they thought I'd become a dope-taking sex pot, and "no granddaughter of mine's going to even have a chance of doing this", according to my paternal grandmother. Thank God, before she passed on, she was able to see the light, and all's forgiven. It took a very long time before anyone else in the family came around, but they know that I don't take "no" for an answer. It wasn't easy, but I've been singing with three different choirs here. I love sacred music, especially the hymnography of the Greek Orthodox Church and Russian Orthodox Church. I also love jazz, Middle Eastern music and many more choral works sung in the Anglocan and Episcopal Churches. Most importantly, I'm doing this, because I love it so much, and it's making my life complete! Thank you, Pat Metheny, for encouraging me to keep working at it. Josh Groban even has a copy of my EP. It's under my Baptismal and Artist name, Anna, and it's on CdBaby and Itunes. It's called Christos Anesti which means Christ is risen in Greek. I'm still working on my voice, but most of all, I'm hoping I can record an album. As I'm getting older, I need to keep my voice in excellent shape, and my health hasn't been that good, as I've been living through extreme nerve pain called Trigeminal Neuralgia and have had two brain surgeries to help manage it. Hopefully, acupuncture will continue to abate it even more, because I've lived through this for 45 years, and music helps pull me through. Thanks to Monica Matthews, I got to record this Ep, and I'm so much happier these days, because I'm comfortable in my own skin, something I couldn't feel for the first 40 years of my life. Oh and yes, I'm typing this using screen-reading software that speaks whatever I'm reading or typing, so I can navigate around the web and KZfaq. Most of all, I'm no longer trying to please everybody else, because nobody can. The sky's the limit, and that resurrection power makes it possible. Glory to God.

It was a pleasure to meet and greet with Ahmad Jamal a number of years ago in Seattle at jazz Alley. I recall telling Ahmad on his break I'm trying to get to my next level and trying to get away from too much reading of all the standards. The standard stuff of the likes of Erroll Garnor, of which is gorgeous, yes. However, the likes of which the standards via reading his stuff is not doing it for me. Thank you. Dean Jackson Seattle
