WOW, that's so cool! I've been fascinated with Madam Leota since I was a kid (57 now). I've always built things like lit-up coffins and cool spider webs, witch's smoking cauldron over burning coals, but my Golden Grail has always been this. I'm going to attempt it this year but the editing of video is so intimidating! Never been anywhere near that kind of stuff. Got all summer to work on it though. I just love this, it's awesome!

I tried to load this into launchbox but it didn't seem to work. It worked outside of launchbox, and I made a seperate emulator add for the older version of MAME that was able to launch this version of Carnevil, but it doesnt work in LB. any ideas? Thanks for your contributions in trying to fix all this haha. its appreciated

You had to use that older version of MAME (from 2016) bc you had old roms/chds. If you have a current set of roms/chds, you can use the newest version of MAME.

i got this to work ONE SINGLE TIME after loading the files where they need to be but after escaping out to change the light gun input to mouse rather than keyboard it has not and WILL NOT load again. I just keep getting the message that im missing rom or chd files. WTF DUDE.

A few things that may help you and others, especially after I saw the 4/22 update to your comments. the b.l.u.f. is that you need to make sure you get a rom and chd from a rom set version that matches the version of MAME you're running. They should only be downloaded from a site that lists the rom set version. The MAME project is (for good or ill) concerned with getting 100% emulation of every arcade. Which is great, but it means they are constantly updating both the rom dumps (when they get a better or more complete dump of a machine) and MAME itself (to better refine their emulation or accommodate the new rom dumps) When you download from a random ROM site, they frequently will have a set of roms from one particular set (usually a Reference Set like .78, or in your case v1.79) and they won't indicate on their site what version it's from. These roms will work just fine until the MAME project updates their software and the rom becomes useless on all versions moving forward. The people hosting the roms either are unaware they need to publish version information (or that some roms go out of date) or they don't want to take the extra time. By their powers combined, it makes it more than a little rough on people who only care about one system or are unconcerned with minor glitches or missing bits. Fortunately there are places to find 'MAME Sets & Datfiles' that are verified and have version information. Unfortunately it's not kosher to put links to them, but search engines are a thing! Anyhoo, if you want to update to a new version or update your computer and are forced to update to a new version, make sure you get a copy of your rom and chd with a known romset version and download a version of MAME to match. I appreciate the video, more so the follow-up calibration video! Best of luck!

i have a question. downloaded the vr version of it and it doesnt display right. only shows like little teeth raining down from the sky video and a choppy figure of a person laying down

Well I was hoping this would work. Unfortunately, I just get the screen flash and then back out. Won't load the game. My batocera>share>roms>mame folder has a carnevil folder with the carnevil.chd file in it. Then I have in the same batocera>share>roms>mame folder a carnevil.zip that has the boot.u32 and the sound102.u95. This has made no difference.

Thank you so much for making this video. I've been wanting to emulate Carnevil for a while. I love arcades and Carnevil has been stuck in the back of my mind for years after stumbling upon it in a dead mall arcade. Absolute fever dream of a game but I'm so happy to have it on my burner PC. I'll be playing it late tonight and probably every Halloween from now on.

For anybody with an F2 key that does nothing, look for an fn key on your board and hold that first. Took me awhile to get to this menu lol.

Hey! I just wanted to say thanks for compiling everything together for us. Made the set up a breeze. I’ve been wanting to play this game for a few years now but was never sure how to set it up. I just got through the first level and am loving it! Still have to calibrate my cursor, but for now the game works. Thanks a whole ton! And for anybody else, the game did freeze when I first started it, but it works just fine after launching it again. I did have to restart my PC because I couldn’t get to task manager. But everything works fine now. I’m on Windows 11 too if that helps.

Hey, I downloaded the pre-organized file for the mouse version and when I opened up mame within the file and tried to boot up the game it told me that “one or more of the required rom or chd images is missing” and to “choose a different machine” even tho it said the sound and video were good and it’s labeled as working, any idea what’s up with mine? On windows 10 btw

I did mine by putting all of the LED+cotton on a 4x8 of the thinest board I could find at home depot for $13 a sheet. 4 small drywall screws and its installed and easily removed if I ever need it to be.

Just can't say thanks enough.As you can see, when you go into the service mode, it says to press the "test" button.Yet, when you press tab and go into the button settings, there IS no "test button" lol.When I saw you press the F2 button, I slapped myself in the head as I had seemingly hit every other button on the keyboard.Lol on me, and thanks again.
