That is just adorable. Clearly superior to catnip. One of my cats loves wool; I bought a sheepskin to use as a chair pad and he tore chunks out of it. His favourite toys are felted wool balls.

And I think this has to be a big reason behind the number of people who just don't feel fit and well but there's no obvious reason for it. It strikes me as a possible factor involved in autoimmune disease.

It is a scary thing, to be sure. And there are so many new chemicals being developed every year that the system and its effects are just horrifically complex to try to study and make sense of.

I have a fabric treatment question! My favorite linen source (fabrics-store) sells pre-softened linen. I’ve made one garment out of it and I do really like it. Do you know anything about the process of softening fabric at the industrial scale? The same site also sells a “linen softening potion” and I would not be surprised if they used something similar in their manufacturing process.

The reason for these very poor " scientific " decisions made by very uninformed " experts is because they know nothing about the subject they claim to know everything about . Computer models are their source, which can be easily manipulated to get the answer you want, by yourself or someone else. They really need to get their hands dirty to become truly knowledgeable. Thank you for exposing this foolishness.

I have been told that DDT, as well as being really harmful to the environment, is cancerogenic and especially harmful to small children even via skin contact only. In Sweden we are recommended to not use old "moth prof" wool products at all, but rather hand it to a waste facility for safe destruction. We are also told not to try to wash the poison out as it then ends up in the waterways.
@KristineVikeКүн бұрын
DDT is devastating. I was not aware that Sweden has such a policy, but I am glad it does. There are a lot of garments, new and old, that should be treated as toxic waste sadly.

I have seen that carbon block filters can grab modern pfas from water. Do you think that washing "moth proof" blankets with activated charcoal would help strip the chemicals off?
@KristineVike2 күн бұрын
It might take some of the leached chemical that would otherwise end up in the effluent water, but I don't think it would strip chemicals from the textile itself that wouldn't otherwise leach off on their own. I can't say anything for sure without finding a study/doing experiments though.

I am not convinced that the alternatives we are getting yet are that much better. From all the things I keep learning, I would rather pick up something 60 years old that has leached what if will leach, than something completely new. At least while producers can keep treating clothes without any label as to what.

I couldn't agree more on the labeling comments. It's absurd that clothing is not better regulated as to content. And things are not even always guaranteed to be what the label claims!
@KristineVike4 күн бұрын
Totally! I wanted to mention rampant mislabelling too, but I worried it would take away from the main point. Why, oh why, are clothes not labelled with the chemicals they have been treated with??
@dawnkindnesscountsmost59914 күн бұрын
@@KristineVike Clothing manufacturers not providing the information of which chemicals are used to treat fabric & clothing, is probably from their fear of that disclosure possibly or probably leading to far fewer sales, especially without information to provide context. Do many people understand what each of the chemicals do, or would many people take the time to research to build their knowledge & understanding? My guess is no, probably not, and so the fearmongering could become rampant. Clothing manufacturers could at least put this info on their websites, with links to layperson-language information on the chemicals used. Editing to add, regulation similar to the cosmetics industry would be great.

As someone who makes part of my clothes, my advice (if you want any) would be to start by looking at the clothes you love and *wear* the most and see if there's any you could reproduce or make a fairly close garment to. It's a good way to make things you know will get used, and it helps build the confidence to try more ambitious things both in terms of style and technique. And since you're making them you can tweak little details to find what you like and explore your style that way.

My experience may be slightly off the mark, yet still in the same area as your topic here. I recently 'suspended' my relationship with a sibling of mine because my sibling prefers to not hear about the sexual abuse that happened long ago within our family. It is not that i bring it up over nd over, it's that i will not be silenced ever again about sexual abuse. However, my sibling is very dismissive around this subject nd so i felt the need to distance myself from this type of negativeness. When i spoke with my sibling to explain my reasoning i realized that my sibling has the right to not be reminded of horrible events nd that i may very well be just as negative to my sibling as my sibling is to me in this aspect. I do try to see perspectives from all sides, but this very idea had not occurred to be beforehand. I love my sibling, nd maybe one day we can reconnect. My takeaway from your topic here is that not everyone is equipped to be an ear for others. It is important to find your people for the betterment of one's overall health. I am glad that you are one such 'ear', Kristine. Thank you. I for one appreciate your existence.
