What a lovely video! Thank you so much. I was curious about when you said dying multiple times. How long do you let the piece of fabric sit before re-dipping? Do you wait for them to be dry before that point?

Are you sure the plants produce oxygen during fermentation? I guess they are producing carbon dioxide or methane instead.

Ive made a vat in the wrongest way possible. Early on, i put a broken bottle of saxon blue indigo into it (thought it was the spare pot i just set down.). I kept it out in the cold, added old apple sauce, indigo hair powder, boiled roselle seed pod juice, some old urine... my biggest setback was being too cautious with my home grown indigo pigment. I never dyed past pale blue!!! This week feels special! 🎉

This is fantastic. Thank you! I just wondered how long you need to wait between each dip? Do you need to let the fabric dry and then redip, or can you dip it after a few minutes?

Do you know how to get indigo out of wool? I dyed my hair with it under the false pretenses that it washes out in 4 weeks and now I'm trying to figure out how to get it out. I'm so devastated

People are way more terrified than they need to be of calcium hydroxide. It's not gonna jump up and rip your throat out with its teeth. I've used a dish soap that dried out my skin more than calcium hydroxide does. It'd suck to get it in your eye or snort lines of it, but the same could be said for beach sand and no one wears goggles, gloves, and a dust mask to go sunbathe on the beach. If you mix it into water, the water doesn't get alkaline enough to taste zappy. It's not gonna dissolve your skin off in minutes like sodium hydroxide. It's really quite a tame alkali. Cool technique though.

I have a question. I've made my fructose vat and dyed a lot of fabrics in it. Now the vat liquid level is getting low - so do i now add more water, fructose, calx and indigo or do I just use up the remaining liquid? I want to continue dyeing some larger pieces. Thanks. -Lucy

The fructose vat…can I make it and leave it alone for days at a time? Can you add more indigo for a darker color or is it really all about how many times you dip?

Is there a recommendation for drying the garments so there are no lines in them? Or will they go away? You said not to allow them to dry draped over the line. I put my shirts on hangers and I’m finding I the shoulders have yellowed. Thanks!

Thank you for the this video! I used the pdf from your website, and it instructed me to use all the iron and calx in the recipe in the stock solution, and only to put water in the larger bucket. This video seems to show you using smaller portions of the iron and calx in the stock solution, and then adding the remainder to the big bucket *before* adding the stock solution. Which of these methods do you recommend as best practice?

hi You say voad is just 25% the colour of indigo. If I process indigopowder off voad will the colour be the same as indigo ? I have tried to dye yarn with voad (leafs) and it was not any sucsess at all.

Yes, the pigment in woad is the same as the pigment in indigo. Make sure the pH of your dye vat is correct, and use thiox to remove oxygen before dyeing. Indigo vats can be very temperamental.

Hello, I need some advice, please.I am trying my hand at dyeing with Indigo and used the banana vat method. My projects came out pretty -I made kitchen towels with my first attempt but after a week on my shelf, my towels were showing a yellow line on the fold of the fabric. It is not lying in the sun, only on an open shelf with good daylight. Can someone explain why this is happening?

It would have been better to NOT work against the dark background with the dark indigo. And for some new to this process a bit more guidance relative to the amounts (water added to indigo) would be helpful.
