I wasn't in the series because I joined the Ark in 1977, but loads of the faces are familiar.

HMS Hermes could manage the Bucaneer surely although I know the Centaur a sister ship couldn’t.

I think the original music suited far better, and not just because I was playing drums on the recording, but because it is strongly associated with the program.

The letter 'R' is the flag superior for aircrft carriers, and each carrier is given a number......in Ark Royal's case 09, hence R09.

A lot of people don't remember the days when Britain had a CATOBAR navy. I've always said that if the old Ark Royal had been around in 1982, with those Phantoms and Buccaneers, the Falklands War would never have happened.

CATOBAR is a system used for the launch and recovery of aircraft from the deck of an aircraft carrier. Under this technique, aircraft launch using a catapult-assisted take-off and land on the ship using arrestor wires. Although this system is costlier than alternative methods, it provides greater flexibility in carrier operations, since it imposes less onerous design elements on fixed wing aircraft than alternative methods of launch and recovery such as STOVL or STOBAR, allowing for a greater payload for more ordnance and/or fuel. CATOBAR can launch aircraft that lack a high thrust to weight ratio, including heavier non-fighter aircraft such as the E-2 Hawkeye and Grumman C-2 Greyhound.

Many Ark Royal veterans involved in the task force must have felt the same way.... Andy Auld, from phantom to sea harrier..... Can't remember his name, but the chap flying choppers whose wife was on the supply ship alongside Ark actually flew the helicopter which got the Santa Fe in South Georgia...... Beautiful old ship, sadly scrapped with no dignity..... Let's hope the old Hermes yet escapes the cutters torch
