As an engineer who grew up a choir boy and loved the pipe organ, and later saw his work being shaken in a powerful acoustic vibe chamber, I have occasionally wondered: have clients ever asked for an organ that was too loud for the space? Do organ builders consider safe decibel levels when designing an instrument for a given space? I have gone home from organ recitals with ringing ears...

It was an improvisation and I have not named it, though I might in the future write it out and fix it up a bit. It draws on elements from a few different hymn tunes, as well as Widor's Regina Coeli

Why build the swell shutters on tht existing back wall if there's no pipes behind them when the all of the organ galleries are all in front of the existing wall?

It's a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, and as a non-practical man I'm awestruck at the sheer ingenuity and inventiveness that go into designing and manufacturing a pipe organ. Well done indeed - and many thanks to all those brilliant men (and maybe women) who contributed to the original construction and now the restoration of this instrument. Peter A

Can you tell me is all the music from rolls or can it be done by midi? can the organ be programmed to play music?
@keggpipeorganbuilders3619
@keggpipeorganbuilders3619 3 жыл бұрын
This organ is a restoration of the complete original system from 1933. It has no MIDI system. It has had a Barden electronic player added to it which parallels the original mechanical system. The Barden player system is not MIDI based, but is a high-resolution system that can capture human playing of the organ. It came with libraries of roll music transcribed from Moller, Skinner, Welte and Aeolian organ rolls.

Pipe organ is very much a very much an intimate work of art communicating music through a media which must surely be one of the first the human mind conceived when he began to whistle and find tubes that make music ! It is so wonderful to hear George Kegg speak of his passion for organ building and hear the glorious instruments that he has created. Amazing combination of talents enable him to create such amazing living music making architecture. When I listen to the great music of JS Bach, I thank God for the gift of the pipe organ and people like Charles Kegg who continue to nurture and build on this extraordinary science. I really believe his art will become increasingly precious as we move towards a world dominated by AI and machine learning to challenge and inspire the mind.

Can you explain in detail how the tremulent works? I'm fascinated by it. I'm blind,so I can't see it.
@keggpipeorganbuilders3619
@keggpipeorganbuilders3619 3 жыл бұрын
I’m happy to explain. The tone is produced by felt tipped hammers striking metal bars. These bars vibrate which produce the tone. This tone is reinforced and amplified by a metal resonator tube placed closely below each bar. There is a tube for each bar and each tube has a length and diameter of a specific size such that it resonates with the frequency of its tone bar. This makes the tone much louder. The tremulant is produced by a disk placed at the end of each tube, just below the tone bar. This disk rotates, which opens and closes the resonator tube, thus making the tone alternate loud and soft. You may note that this tremulant affects only volume and not pitch, which is unusual for a tremulant. This is part of the Vibraharp’s unique tone quality. There is a part of the mechanism that insures that the disk is in the open position when it is stopped.

That is a volt meter, which was standard equipment on a Moller organ of this time. It is only active when you press the small button under the bottom keyboard at the far left. The button is visible just for a short time in the video. This is a leftover from the early days of electric action when the voltage was supplied by batteries. You didn't want to drain the batteries any more than necessary, so you checked the voltage with the volt meter only when needed. Eventually, the volt meter was replaced by a current lamp. The lamp was also only lit when the button was pressed. This button continued to be used by Moller almost to the end of their production.

Cool. I thought it might have been for wind pressure (in./W.C.) but couldn't think why. I have a Spencer Orgoblo blower that has a DC generator mounted "piggyback" on the blower motor, and belt driven from a pulley on the rear of the motor. Oddly enough, the generator looks like a small motor...
