Dear Howard I'm so glad to have found your channel and in particular this video of yours. I'm crazy in love with pleurothallis pterophora and have been recently gifted by a little keiki generosly sent me as a present from Kopf which has been the only nursery in Europe where I ve found the species, they have been so kind cause the species wasn't in their list for sale. Im in love with the little baby yet but I would love to have cultural advices even if I know you in England are blessed with perfect cool weather meanwhile we in Italy have an incredible hot climate right now. Do you asked the previous owners of your p.pterophora for advices on its culture? I would love my little keiki to get into bloom and thrive ❤️ btw sometimes there are phalaenopsis parishii that are fragrant and has a likely scent of lily of the valley but u nearly have to stick the nose in the flowers to detect it. Thank you for any help you may give me ❤ on the p.pterohora

Isn’t Angraecum the genus that was named by Indonesian/Malay word for orchid "Anggrek"? This orchid looks like a lily. I was told Orchids were classified in Liliaceae. I watched an old botanist calling it a part of Liliaceae and thought he might missed the memo 😅

Hello Howard. This is infact swaniana x tomentosa. Pure tomentosa has rounder form, more substrance and ochre light yellow flowers and a wider lip. There is also avaliable swaniana x odoardii which is a very insteresting hybrid as well.

When I had only 3 plants to care for, in a small apartment, I used a simple aquaponics fertilization system with them. I just immersed each one in my 50 gallon fish tank, every time I wanted to water them. I had awesome results, specially considering they were inside, growing by the windowsill. BUT it was just three plants which I was sure didn't have any viruses or fungi to pass from one to the other... Now I have more than 200 pots, outside under shade cloth, I wouldn't want to have them sharing the same fertilizer water... I do have the occasional pathogenic fungus attack on a pot or another, and it is hard enough to deal with that without increasing the odds of spreading it around.

I found thrips on my plants a few days ago ans have been using Acetamiprid. It's UK legal and should work fine. I got a sachet of powder to dilute and spray and you can also get a soil drench for it, so that may be something to look into for your thrips. I don't have personal evidence of it as I've only been using it for a few days, though.

@HowardRice

Hi David, I have both of those. I've had the Ceratochilus for over 7 years. It grows very slowly but surely and flowers at least once a year. I included it in a video - Episode 26 if you want to see it. My Neocogniauxia is several years old but hasn't flowered yet and also grows very slowly so I need to try and work out what I'm doing wrong.

Have you ever watched missorchidgirl? On KZfaq of course. I’m sure you know of her but she had horrible issues with thrips and her cattleya collection as well as other orchids. She has an amazing diy insecticide that is mineral oil based and very easy and not harmful at all. Some plants are sensitive but she will tell you about it. If you ever find you wanna try something else. Here’s the link. And she also battled with spider mites for many years. She doesn’t like chemicals and found out this works great. I love your methods of helpful creatures to do the bidding!

Thanks. Yes, I've watched quite a few videos on pest controls over the years. There's no shortage of suggestions. I have used neem oil in the past for red spider which seemed to work quite well but I'm quite attracted to the concept of using natural predators. In the case of orchids snails and any visiting slugs the predator is me with a torch!

Have you ever heard or know anything about Pteroceras Longicalcarcum? I just received this orchid and it’s very very hard to find much out about it, even pictures but from what I’ve seen, I’m very excited about it. However, I would love to know from someone who personally grows it. Please and thankyou, it would help me a lot. I love this video and the glauca is a wonderful orchid. I can’t believe this is your first video. Because it’s very very helpful and genuine. Best regards -L

Hi Laura, No I haven't grown this one. The internet says warm growing. From the images on Google it looks like it would do well and look good on a cork mount. When you searched for information did you spell it correctly? Its longicalcareum not longicalcarcum.

Have you ever considered supplementing with unnatural lights just for like part of the green house in the winter?? I thought I’d never like that but having the advantages of setting a timer and having so many attractive grow lights these days and of any color variety or warmth of your choosing is really impossible for me to say no to these days. Especially for seedlings or problem plants in recovery. Or just ones that are very finicky in certain seasons. I love the way you grow your orchids and I don’t think you need to change anything. But I’ve heard you mention the winter sulking before, even in reference to some of your favorites(from what I remember) I think the best thing for us growersin this hobby is when we are able to make our plants the most happy. And I find that supplemental light bars or low profile panels. Even the tape lights (in a nice kelvin temperature of course because no one likes that awful purple toned grow light.) Or whatever you prefer.. I find that it really has helped me out a lot.. and even enhances the growth of a lot of my orchids, as well as the color of many of their leaves. Probably simply because I can regulate the light much more than trying to regulate things around the sun, haha. Just something to think about. -L

I did rig up an LED light last winter as an experiment. It didn't seem to make any difference. The area over which it had any real effect was so small. I would need a huge array of lights to make a difference. Also, without having more heat the warm growing species still wouldn't be any happier in winter.
@LauraStansfield-tw7xb
@LauraStansfield-tw7xb Ай бұрын
@@HowardRice yeah that makes sense. If it’s a heat issue then you’re definitely right and yeah I got these really inexpensive lights that are in a pack of 8-12 of them because you do need quite a bit and I paid less than $50 which is amazing and I find them to be very bright but they also need to be about 12-18 inches from the plants so it’s nice to have so many lightweight ones to work with but they def don’t put out much heat at all.

Thank you very much. The packet says it treats 30m of bush but only with about 3 litres. So I just used a watering can and went over the top. Is that enough or should I water each section of the bush?
@HowardRice
@HowardRice Ай бұрын
I expect it will work. You will be able to tell in a couple of days if you inspect your plants carefully for dead caterpillars. But my feeling is that it is wasteful not to use a pressure spray since a lot will simply run off. You only need to mist over the foliage and particularly the undersides which are protected from rain. Using this method, as in my video, 3 litres gives a very even coverage and goes a very long way. I treat 13 large pieces of topiary with some to spare.

i have this problem this year, i have a garden full of box and have been successful in tackling the problem... i have been spraying the plants heavily every couple of days with green fairy liquid in water , deep inside the plant and on the outside. i took off a few caterpillars, put them on a plate, sprayed them to see the effect and they died in a few minutes. it cost nothing and has had no effect on the health of the plant.
