A really underrated Scorsese movie. One of his best, in my opinion.

I remember watching this show as a teenager in the early 80s and thinking about how Vietnam/Johnson/Nixon/Watergate were still fresh in Americas psyche, and that it was a protest of those fiascos, and not to take any of it too seriously. It’s now 2024 and too much of this movie is now real life and not just dystopia/cyberpunk. I now know in some sense how Snake Plisken feels.

I thought this was a terrific, and truly unique sequel in that it wasn't a "continuation." Instead, it had the character at a different stage in his life. Cruise played the part of the "kid in training" perfectly. The main criticism was the ending. I felt it was weak.

Going through my own version of “I’m back” now. Paul Newman nails it. Being an expert at something you’ve spent your whole life perfecting and getting a chance at the end is the BEST🤘😎🇺🇸🇺🇸(Gen Xer)

Unpopular opinion, but I didn’t think the LA one was all that terrible. This would have made a good trilogy.
@miguelesteban5768

It was suppose to be a trilogy. Carpenter had an idea for the next one to be “Escape from Earth” which Snake escapes Planetary Destruction while fighting against the USPF. But after L.A.’s box office fail, the studio wouldn’t give Carpenter the budget, plus eventually he was getting sick of Hollyweird and the way things was going for cinema, so it’s never been talked on again. Now he just exec produces ppl that wanna remake his films.

Reevaluating this movie now and everyone's attention at the time was on Mastrantonio and Newman, but Tom Cruise was very much holding his own with them. The attacks on his acting back then were just completely unfair.

Many layers behind this movie. Newman just knowing he's back in form was enough for himself - and listening to the sound of his own break (like when he first heard Cruise's break) - to close out the movie.

Never -- not once -- have I ever heard/read anyone say/write: "You [the audience] got hustled. And it was so expertly done, you still don't realize it." Not even almost 40 years later. The end was anticlimactic because IT WAS DESIGNED THAT WAY. The actual climax happened when Vincent realized his greatness as a hustler. So great, in fact, not even Fast Eddie Felson got a read on it.

Strange this films seems more dated than The Hustler. I just cant shake the 80s feel to it. Cruise is to over the top for my taste. Also he seems mismatched with what's her name.
